Pablo Held lädt auch im Jahr 2021 wieder ein! Er habe sich danach gefühlt, die Musik von Thelonious Monk zu spielen, sagt er, und so darf man sich freuen auf seinen persönlichen Zugriff auf die einzigartig-unverwechselbaren Techniken und Kompositionen der Klavier-Legende Monk (1917-1982): rohe, vermeintlich unbearbeitete Glissandi, unkonventionelle Akzente, gegen den Strich gebürstete Akkorde, (selbst-)ironische Dissonanzen, und dann ständig dieser aufmüpfige Mut zu „ungehörigen“ Pausen, die alles auszubremsen scheinen und doch erst die Atmung so richtig in Gang setzen.
Sie studierte an der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim, bei ihrem ersten Kölner Auftritt hatte sie sich mit Schlagzeuger Jonas Kaltenbach dem musikalischen Kosmos von Lee Konitz verschrieben. Im Rahmen des 11. KLAENG-Festivals „The Solo Edition“ brillierte sie kürzlich mit einem komplexen, intensiven Einzelauftritt. „Mein Traum ist es“, sagt sie, „so verständlich wie möglich für jeden zu sein, egal welchen Hintergrund er hat, ohne die Qualität der Musik zu beeinträchtigen.“ Wobei die junge Saxofonistin bereits jetzt ihren eigenen Stil gefunden hat, schnörkellos, unaufgeregt, bei aller Freiheit geerdet in melodischer Delikatesse. Man darf sich freuen auf das anspruchsvolle Wechselspiel, das sich mit Pablo Held entwickeln wird.

Pablo Held meets continues in 2021! He felt like playing the music of Thelonious Monk, he says, and so you can look forward to his personal take on the unique-unmistakable techniques and compositions of piano legend Monk (1917-1982): raw, supposedly unedited glissandi, unconventional accents, chords brushed against the grain, (self-)ironic dissonances, and then constantly this rebellious courage to “unseemly” pauses that seem to slow everything down and yet only really get the breathing going.
For such tone sequences, which take their time and yet always maintain the tension, a particularly harmonious quartet is needed. Pablo Held has invited Fabian Arends (drums) and Christian Ramond (double bass), two outstanding protagonists (not only) of the Cologne scene – and Kristina Shamgunova, a young alto saxophonist from Mannheim.
She studied at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts, and at her first Cologne appearance she and drummer Jonas Kaltenbach devoted themselves to the musical cosmos of Lee Konitz. As part of the 11th KLAENG Festival “The Solo Edition,” she recently shone with a complex, intense solo performance. “My dream,” she says, “is to be as understandable as possible to everyone, no matter what their background, without compromising the quality of the music.” Whereby the young saxophonist has already found her own style, unfussy, unexcited, grounded in melodic delicacy for all her freedom. One can look forward to the demanding interplay that will develop with Pablo Held.
