Die beiden Musiker haben sich 1987 dank des gemeinsamen Freundes und Schlagzeugers Ernst Bier in New York kennengelernt, viel gejammt, sich musikalisch ausgetauscht und eine gemeinsame Sprache und ein Verständnis füreinander entwickelt, welches bis heute gilt.
Seit Nabatov 1989 nach Köln kam, haben sie immer wieder gemeinsame Bands und Projekte ins Leben gerufen. Das Matthias Schubert Quartett (mit Lindsey Horner am Bass und Tom Rainey am Schlagzeug) hat intensiv konzertiert und drei CDs veröffentlicht („For Thieves and Lovers“ 1992, „Blue and Grey Suite“ 1995 und „Momentum“ 2000). Parallel dazu entstand das Duo Schubert/Nabatov, mit zahlreichen Auftritten und der 2013 veröffentlichten CD „Descriptions“. Matthias Schubert ist unter anderem auf Nabatovs Quintett-CD „Roundtrip“ oder der Septett-Aufnahme „Time Labyrinth“ zu hören, sowie im Kollektiv-Trio „Square Down“ mit Ernst Reijseger.
Seitdem das Duo wieder aktiv ist, hat es zwei Bandcamp Veröffentlichungen publiziert – Fragment (2020, Live-Mitschnitt aus dem LOFT) und Old Sins (2021, auf abenteuerliche Weise wiedergefundene Aufnahme aus dem Jahr 1993), beide auf https://simonnabatov.bandcamp.com/ zu hören.
Im Jahr 2022 erhielt das Duo ein dreimonatiges Ensemble Stipendium des Musikfonds e.V., und nutzte es, um komplett neues Programm zu schreiben, proben, aufnehmen und konzertant zu präsentieren.

The two musicians met in New York in 1987 thanks to their mutual friend and drummer Ernst Bier, jammed a lot, exchanged musical ideas and developed a common language and understanding for each other that still holds true today.
Since Nabatov came to Cologne in 1989, they have repeatedly launched joint bands and projects. The Matthias Schubert Quartet (with Lindsey Horner on bass and Tom Rainey on drums) has performed extensively and released three CDs („For Thieves and Lovers“ 1992, „Blue and Grey Suite“ 1995 and „Momentum“ 2000). Parallel to this, the Schubert/Nabatov duo was formed, with numerous performances and the CD „Descriptions“ released in 2013. Matthias Schubert can be heard on Nabatov’s quintet CD „Roundtrip“ or the septet recording „Time Labyrinth“, among others, as well as in the collective trio „Square Down“ with Ernst Reijseger.
Since becoming active again, the duo has published two Bandcamp releases – Fragment (2020, live recording from LOFT) and Old Sins (2021, adventurously recovered recording from 1993), both available at https://simonnabatov.bandcamp.com/.
In 2022, the duo received a three-month ensemble grant from the Musikfonds e.V. and used it to write, rehearse, record and present a completely new programme in concert.
