Das Wuppertaler Improvisationsorchester (WIO) ist ein freies Großensemble, das sich der kollektiven Klangforschung und spontanen Komposition verschrieben hat.

Es vereint rund 30 Musiker*innen aus ganz Nordrhein-Westfalen – darunter erfahrene Improvisationskünstler*innen sowie junge Talente aus Jazz, Neuer Musik, Performance und Klangkunst.
Zentraler Bestandteil des WIO ist die Arbeit mit der sogenannten Conduction: eine Form der dirigierten Improvisation, bei der wechselnde Ensemblemitglieder mit Handzeichen und Gesten musikalische Strukturen in Echtzeit gestalten. Auf diese Weise entstehen Konzerte mit einzigartigem Charakter – zwischen Komposition und Improvisation, Kollektiv und Einzelstimme.
Inspiriert durch und in der Anfangszeit im regen Austausch mit dem LIO (London Improvisers‘ Orchestra) ist das WIO seit seiner Gründung 2007 durch Gunda Gottschalk, Christoph Irmer und Georg Wissel mit dieser Ausrichtung eine Ausnahmeerscheinung unter den wenigen Improvisierenden Großensembles in Deutschland.

An orchestra that conducts itself

The Wuppertal Improvisation Orchestra (WIO) is an independent large ensemble dedicated to collective sound exploration and spontaneous composition.

It brings together around 30 musicians from across North Rhine-Westphalia – including experienced improvisers as well as young talents from the fields of jazz, contemporary music, performance art, and sound art.
A central component of the WIO is its work with so-called “conduction”: a form of conducted improvisation in which rotating ensemble members use hand signals and gestures to shape musical structures in real time. This gives rise to concerts with a unique character—somewhere between composition and improvisation, collective and individual voice.
Inspired by and, in its early days, in lively exchange with the LIO (London Improvisers’ Orchestra), the WIO—founded in 2007 by Gunda Gottschalk, Christoph Irmer, and Georg Wissel—stands out as a unique phenomenon among the few large improvisational ensembles in Germany.
