Zum 10. Mal laden die beiden Kuratoren Hayden Chisholm und Gareth Lubbe zum PLUSHMUSIC Festival ein, um im LOFT an drei Tagen komponierte und improvisierte Musik zu präsentieren.
Im Mittelpunkt steht dieses Mal der ehemalige Lehrer Chisholms, Frank Gratkowski, der in diesem Jahr seinen 60. Geburtstag gefeiert hat. Seine vielfältige musikalische Bandbreite wird gemeinsam mit zahlreichen Kolleg*innen der klassischen wie der improvisierten Musik zu hören sein.
Dietmar Wiesner, Christian Hommel und Johannes Schwarz – die drei Holzbläser des Ensemble Modern – haben Frank in der Vergangenheit bereits zu Improvisationsworkshops eingeladen, sie reisen für ein Bläser-Quartett mit ihm aus Frankfurt an. Mit dabei sind auch langjährige musikalische Wegbegleiter*innen wie Achim Kaufmann, die Sängerin Jelena Kuljic kennt er aus seiner Zeit mit der Avant-Rock-Band Z-Country Paradise, und äußerst gespannt sind wir auf die Premiere des Trios mit Andrea Parkins und Elisabeth Coudoux.
Gareth Lubbe kann dieses Mal nicht beim Festival mitwirken, hat aber ein junges Streichensemble zusammengestellt, welches die kammermusikalische Tradition von PLUSH in absentia weiterführen wird: sie werden unter Anderem Kompositionen von Strawinsky, Lutoslawski, Chisholm und Veress in Kontext zu den Improvisationen von Frank und seinen Mitmusiker*innen stellen.
Drei Abende voll spannender Musik, oder Three nights of living music mit und um Frank Gratkowski herum, der seit Beginn des LOFTs im Jahr 1989 mit seiner ungewöhnlichen musikalischen Vielseitigkeit für das Programm dieses Ortes steht.

Mit Andrea Parkins spiele ich seit 2013 zusammen. Es gab immer wieder Erweiterungen zum Trio, u.A. mit Nate Wooley in New York.
Elisabeth Coudoux kenne ich schon etliche Jahre. Anfangs als Studentin, und nun als Kollegin im Ensemble Zeitkratzer.
Ich hatte schon länger die Idee, ein Trio mit Andrea und Elisabeth zu machen, und freue mich auf diese erste Begegnung als Trio.

Über die Künstler*innen:
Andrea Parkins
ist eine elektroakustische Musikerin, Komponistin und Klangkünstlerin, die sich mit interaktiver Elektronik als kompositorischem/performativem Prozess beschäftigt. Sie arbeitet mit einer Reihe von Klangmaterialien – elektronisch bearbeitetes Akkordeon, eigens entwickelte Software, verstärkte Objekte und elektronisches Feedback – und erforscht in ihren Performances und Installationen Verbindungen und Abweichungen zwischen Körper, Materialität, Klang, Ort und Raum. Parkins‘ Projekte umfassen Mehrkanal-Klangperformances und intermediale Installationen, elektroakustische Solo- und Ensemblekompositionen sowie Sound für zeitgenössischen Tanz, Experimentalfilm und intermediale Performances. Sie tritt als Solokünstlerin auf und hat u. a. mit Künstlern wie Ute Wassermann, Magda Mayas, George E. Lewis, Nels Cline, The Necks, der Choreografin Vera Mantero und der Filmemacherin Abigail Child zusammengearbeitet. Ihre Performances und Installationen wurden unter anderem im Whitney Museum of American Art, Café Oto, The Kitchen, Experimental Intermedia (NYC), der Kunsthalle Basel und dem Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain in Straßburg gezeigt. Zu seinen Festivalauftritten zählen NEXT/Bratislava, Cyberfest/St. Petersburg, All Ears/Oslo, Jazz im Augusto/Lissabon, Music Unlimited/Wels und viele mehr.
Zu Parkins‘ jüngsten Projekten gehören The Stray II, eine ortsabhängige 8-Kanal-Raumklang- und Bildinstallation, die derzeit auf der Nordic Biennale/Galleri F15 in Moss, Norwegen, zu sehen ist, ihre Intermedia-Installation Sonic Spaces for the Stray, die 2021 im ROM for kunst og arkitektur in Oslo präsentiert wird, und ihre Performance/Installation Two Rooms, Variation 1, für 40 Lautsprecher und Solo Performer, die 2016 beim Akousma Festival in Montreal uraufgeführt wurde.
In den Jahren 2022-2023 ist sie Stipendiatin des Berliner Förderprogramms Künstlerische Forschung / Berlin Artistic Research Grant Programme.
Elisabeth Coudoux
Die Suche nach neuen Klängen und Spieltechniken führte die Cellistin Elisabeth Coudoux, geb. 1985, von einem klassischen Instrumentalstudium über den Jazz zur Neuen Musik und freien Improvisation. Das Ausloten des Klangspektrums am Instrument ist für sie eine sich stets ausweitende Suche nach der eigenen Stimme. Aus der Analyse intuitiver Bewegunsmuster entstehen poetische Miniaturen, geräuschhafte Geschichten werden erzählt und unbekannte Klanglandschaften erkundet. Als Solistin liebt sie Herausforderung spontaner Begegnungen. Sie spielte unter anderem zusammen mit Michael Zerang, Mark Dresser, Biliana Voutchkova, Mick Beck, Sandra Weiss, Xavier Charles, Marcus Schmickler, usw.
In ihrem 2013 gegründeten Ensemble Emißatett resoniert das Cello als orchestraler Klangkörper in gleichberechtigten Teilen mit den anderen Spielern, wobei sich die Gewichte stets zwischen individuellem Ausdruck und freier kollektiver Energie verlagern. Zu verhandeln ist dabei eine Balance zwischen improvisierendem Eigensinn und der gemeinsamen musikalischen Form. Coudoux spielt weltweit auf Festivals und Konzertreihen wie: All Ears Festival, In a Landscape, Moers Festival, Roskilde Festival, Krakau Jazz Autumn, Drei Tage Zeit, Météo – Festival u.v.m. Sie ist Mitglied in mehreren Ensembles und Projekten wie Zeitkratzer, Fear O‘ She (Gropper, Kaufmann, Kummer, Coudoux) sowie NICA -Stipendiatin und Initiatorin und langjähriger Vorstand von IMPAKT e.V.

Susanne Szambelan
Susanne Szambelan debütierte im Alter von 15 Jahren mit dem Sinfonieorchester der Stadt Kaunas, es folgten zahlreiche Soloauftritte in ganz Europa. Im Jahr 2014 zog sie nach Berlin, wo sie ihr Bachelor- und Masterstudium an der Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler bei Prof. Stephan Forck und Prof. Claudio Bohorquez mit höchster Auszeichnung abschloss. Ihre große Leidenschaft für die Kammermusik führte zur Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlerpersönlichkeiten wie Daniel Hope oder Noah Bendix-Balgley, und zu häufigen Auftritten mit der Karajan-Akademie der Berliner Philharmoniker. Susanne trat bei Festivals wie dem Krzyżowa-Music Festival, dem Zermatt-Festival und dem Santander Festival auf. Aktuell ist sie Stipendiatin der Villa Musica Rheinland-Pfalz. Ihre Solo- und Kammermusikauftritte wurden unter anderem auf ARTE Concert und Deutschlandfunk Kultur ausgestrahlt.
Max Baillie
Der deutsch-britische Geiger und Bratschist Max Baillie ist Absolvent der Yehudi Menuhin School, der Universität Cambridge und der Universität der Künste Berlin, und ist im In- und Ausland ein gefragter Solist, Kammermusiker und Orchesterleiter. Zu seinen Lehrer*innen zählen Natasha Boyarsky, Itzhak Rashkovsky und Ivry Gitlis. Er hat mit Künstler*innen wie Steve Reich, Björk, John Williams, Bobby McFerrin und vielen anderen zusammengearbeitet. Als regelmäßiger Gastdirigent des Schweizer Kammerorchesters CHAARTS tourte er mit Künstlern wie Mischa Maisky und Fazil Say durch die Schweiz, Deutschland und China und hat Aufnahmen für SONY und Berlin Classics gemacht, dazu nimmt er regelmäßig an Kammermusikfestivals in der ganzen Welt teil (SoNoRo, Purbeck International Chamber Music Festival, West Wycombe Chamber Music Festival uvw).
Frank Gratkowski
begann im Alter von 16 Jahren mit dem Saxophonspiel und erhielt ersten Unterricht an der Hamburger Musikhochschule. 1985 begann er sein Saxophonstudium an der Musikhochschule Köln bei Heiner Wiberny, das er 1990 mit dem Konzertexamen abschloss. Weitere Studien u. a. bei Charlie Mariano, Sal Nistico und Steve Lacy schlossen sich an.
Frühe Zusammenarbeit mit Klaus König und dem Grubenklangorchester, später spielte Gratkowski u. a. mit der WDR-Bigband. Ab 1990 trat er mit ersten Solo-Programmen auf (1991 auf der CD Artikulationen). Seit 1992 spielt er im Duo mit dem Pianisten Georg Gräwe, seit 1999 auch als Trio mit dem Schlagzeuger Paul Lovens. Eine feste Zusammenarbeit verbindet ihn auch mit dem Pianisten Achim Kaufmann. Außerdem spielt Gratkowski in verschiedenen Trio- und Quartett-Besetzungen, u. a. mit Sebastian Gramss, Philip Zoubek, Gerry Hemingway (Double Blues Crossing), Dieter Manderscheid, Wilbert de Joode und Paul Lovens. Auch gehört er dem Ensemble Zeitkratzer an. Mit Baby Sommers großformatiger Brotherhood & Sisterhood gastierte er 2023 bei JazzBaltica.
Gratkowski gilt als talentierter Klangforscher, dem die Erweiterung des Klang-Arsenals seiner Klarinetten und Saxophone, die Erforschung der Klangmöglichkeit jenseits der klassischen Tonerzeugung, sehr wichtig ist. Seine z. T. mikrotonal orientierten Kompositionen führt er auch mit dem Multiple Joy[ce] Orchestra auf.
Er unterrichtete an den Musikhochschulen in Köln, Hannover und Berlin.

Gareth Lubbe – Viola
Der in Südafrika geborene Violist und Obertonsänger Gareth Lubbe präsentiert sich sowohl als Solist als auch Kammermusiker auf Bühnen internationaler Festivals und als Dozent auf Meisterkursen in Europa, Afrika, Amerika sowie Asien. Ehemals Solobratschist des Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, leitet Gareth derzeit als Professor für Viola eine internationale Klasse an der Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen.
Als Obertonsänger konzertiert und gibt er Workshops auf der ganzen Welt. Vielzählig wurden Werke für Lubbes Obertongesang geschrieben. Seine Stimme ist in Film, Fernsehen, Radio und sogar Computerspielen zu erleben. 1994 hatte er die Ehre, bei der Amtseinführung des Präsidenten Nelson Mandela zu spielen.
Er ist Vorstandsmitglied von „Community H.E.A.R.T” (Health, Education and Reconstruction Training), eine Initiative des südafrikanischen Freiheitskämpfers Denis Goldberg. Im Jahre 2019 wurde Gareth Lubbe zum internationalen Botschafter seines sozialen Projektes “Denis Goldberg House of Hope” in Kapstadt berufen.
Hayden Chisholm – Saxophon
Wenn man einen Ort wie das LOFT betreibt ist es eine wunderbare Erfahrung, die Karriere von Musiker*innen über einen langen Zeitraum zu verfolgen und miterleben zu können. Und so wird Hayden Chisholm schon seit seinen ersten Tagen 1995 in Köln im LOFT gesehen und geschätzt, denn sein Lehrer Frank Gratkowski machte uns sofort auf ihn aufmerksam. Seitdem hat er im LOFT unzählige Konzerte gespielt und veranstaltet (hier hatte er immer eine wild card), neben seiner internationalen Karriere fand er stets Zeit und hatte Lust, Projekte im LOFT zu verwirklichen – unvergessen z.B. seine Konzerte Egyptian Book of the Dead oder 100 years Bloomsday, wo er sowohl sein Talent als ausgezeichneter Rezitator aber auch als Dudelsackspieler unter Beweis stellte. Was Hayden in die Hand nimmt, wird zu Musik – ob mit den Afro Lounge Brothers, mit dem unvergessenen John Taylor oder bei seinem Konzertexamen in der Aula der Musikhochschule für Musik und Tanz (das war wie: John Cage trifft Paul Desmond): stets umgibt ihn eine Aura, die „außerhalb der Gewohnheit“ ist. Immer wieder machte er das Publikum mit phantastischen Musiker*innen bekannt, und so war und ist er immer wieder von unschätzbarem Wert für die künstlerische Entwicklung des Programmes im LOFT.

For the 10th time, curators Hayden Chisholm and Gareth Lubbe invite you to the PLUSHMUSIC Festival to present three days of composed and improvised music at the LOFT.
This time, the focus will be on Chisholm’s former teacher, Frank Gratkowski, who celebrated his 60th birthday this year. His diverse musical range will be heard together with numerous colleagues of classical as well as improvised music.
Dietmar Wiesner, Christian Hommel and Johannes Schwarz – the three woodwind players of the Ensemble Modern – have invited Frank to improvisation workshops in the past, and they will travel from Frankfurt for a wind quartet with him. Long-time musical companions such as Achim Kaufmann will also be joining him, he knows the singer Jelena Kuljić from his time with the avant-rock band Z-Country Paradise, and we are extremely excited about the premiere of the trio with Andrea Parkins and Elisabeth Coudoux.
Gareth Lubbe will not be able to join the festival this time, but he has put together a young string ensemble that will continue the chamber music tradition of PLUSH in absentia: among other things, they will put compositions by Stravinsky, Lutoslawski, Chisholm and Veress in context with the improvisations of Frank and his fellow musicians.
Three evenings full of exciting music, or Three nights of living music with and around Frank Gratkowski, who since the beginning of the LOFT in 1989 has stood for the program of this place with his unusual musical versatility.
Andrea Parkins
is an electroacoustic musician, composer, and sound artist working with interactive electronics as a compositional/performative process. She works with a range of sound materials-electronically processed accordion, custom software, amplified objects, and electronic feedback-and explores connections and discrepancies between body, materiality, sound, place, and space in her performances and installations. Parkins‘ projects include multi-channel sound performances and intermedia installations, solo and ensemble electroacoustic compositions, and sound for contemporary dance, experimental film, and intermedia performances. She performs as a solo artist and has collaborated with artists including Ute Wassermann, Magda Mayas, George E. Lewis, Nels Cline, The Necks, choreographer Vera Mantero, and filmmaker Abigail Child. Her performances and installations have been shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Café Oto, The Kitchen, Experimental Intermedia (NYC), Kunsthalle Basel, and the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain in Strasbourg, among others. Elisabeth Coudoux
The search for new sounds and playing techniques led cellist Elisabeth Coudoux, born in 1985, from classical instrumental studies to jazz to new music and free improvisation. For her, exploring the spectrum of sounds on the instrument is an ever-expanding search for her own voice. From the analysis of intuitive movement patterns, poetic miniatures emerge, noisy stories are told and unknown soundscapes are explored. As a soloist she loves the challenge of spontaneous encounters. She has performed with Michael Zerang, Mark Dresser, Biliana Voutchkova, Mick Beck, Sandra Weiss, Xavier Charles, Marcus Schmickler, etc..
In her ensemble Emißatett, founded in 2013, the cello resonates as an orchestral sound body in equal parts with the other players, with the weights always shifting between individual expression and free collective energy. What has to be negotiated is a balance between improvisational stubbornness and the common musical form. Coudoux plays worldwide at festivals and concert series such as: All Ears Festival, In a Landscape, Moers Festival, Roskilde Festival, Krakow Jazz Autumn, Three Days Time, Météo – Festival and many more. She is a member of several ensembles and projects such as Zeitkratzer, Fear O‘ She (Gropper, Kaufmann, Kummer, Coudoux) as well as a NICA -scholarship holder and initiator and longtime board member of IMPAKT e.V.

Susanne Szambelan – Cello
Susanne Szambelan made her debut at the age of 15 with the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, followed by numerous solo performances throughout Europe. In 2014 she moved to Berlin, where she completed her bachelor’s and master’s studies at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music with Prof. Stephan Forck and Prof. Claudio Bohorquez with highest honors. Her great passion for chamber music led to collaborations with artistic personalities such as Daniel Hope and Noah Bendix-Balgley, and frequent performances with the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic. Susanne has performed at festivals such as the Krzyżowa Music Festival, the Zermatt Festival, and the Santander Festival. She is currently a scholarship recipient of the Villa Musica Rheinland-Pfalz. Her solo and chamber music performances have been broadcast on ARTE Concert and Deutschlandfunk Kultur, among others.
Max Baillie
The German-British violinist and violist is a graduate of the Yehudi Menuhin School, the University of Cambridge and the University of the Arts Berlin, and is in demand as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra leader in Germany and abroad. His teachers include Natasha Boyarsky, Itzhak Rashkovsky and Ivry Gitlis. He has collaborated with artists such as Steve Reich, Björk, John Williams, Bobby McFerrin and many others. As a regular guest conductor of the Swiss chamber orchestra CHAARTS, he has toured Switzerland, Germany and China with artists such as Mischa Maisky and Fazil Say and has made recordings for SONY and Berlin Classics, in addition to regularly participating in chamber music festivals around the world (SoNoRo, Purbeck International Chamber Music Festival, West Wycombe Chamber Music Festival, etc.).
Frank Gratkowski
began playing the saxophone at the age of 16 and received his first lessons at the Hamburg Musikhochschule. In 1985 he began his saxophone studies at the Musikhochschule Köln with Heiner Wiberny, which he completed in 1990 with the concert exam. Further studies with Charlie Mariano, Sal Nistico and Steve Lacy followed.
Early collaborations with Klaus König and the Grubenklangorchester, later Gratkowski played with the WDR Big Band, among others. Gratkowski is considered a talented sound researcher to whom the expansion of the sound arsenal of his clarinets and saxophones, the exploration of sound possibilities beyond classical tone production, is very important. He also performs his partly microtonally oriented compositions with the Multiple Joy[ce] Orchestra.
He taught at the music academies in Cologne, Hanover and Berlin.

Gareth Lubbe
South African born violist and overtone singer Gareth Lubbe presents himself as soloist as well as chamber musician on stages of international festivals and as lecturer on master classes in Europe, Africa, America as well as Asia. Formerly principal violist of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Gareth currently leads an international class at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen as professor of viola.
As an overtone singer, he performs and gives workshops around the world. Numerous works have been written for Lubbe’s overtone singing. His voice can be heard in film, television, radio and even computer games. In 1994, he had the honor of performing at the inauguration of President Nelson Mandela.
He is a board member of Community H.E.A.R.T (Health, Education and Reconstruction Training), an initiative of South African freedom fighter Denis Goldberg. In 2019, Gareth Lubbe was appointed international ambassador of his social project „Denis Goldberg House of Hope“ in Cape Town.
Hayden Chisholm
When you run a place like the LOFT it is a wonderful experience to be able to follow and witness the career of musicians* over a long period of time. And so Hayden Chisholm has been seen and appreciated at LOFT since his first days in Cologne in 1995, because his teacher Frank Gratkowski immediately brought him to our attention. Since then he has played and organized countless concerts at LOFT (he always had a wild card here), besides his international career he always found time and had the desire to realize projects at LOFT – unforgettable e.g. his concerts Egyptian Book of the Dead or 100 years Bloomsday,where he proved both his talent as an excellent reciter but also as a bagpipe player. What Hayden takes in hand becomes music – whether with theAfro Lounge Brothers, with the unforgotten John Taylor or at his concert exam in the auditorium of the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (which was like: John Cage meets Paul Desmond): always an aura surrounds him that is „out of the ordinary“. Again and again he introduced the audience to fantastic musicians*, and so he was and still is invaluable for the artistic development of the program at LOFT.
