Vor der Pandemie und inmitten der Brexit-Wirren wurde diese Band an der Jazzwerkstatt 2019 aus der Taufe gehoben und vereint fünf äusserst eigenständige Musiker*innen aus England, Irland und der Schweiz, welche europaweit unter eigenem Namen wie auch als Sidemen bzw. Sidewoman für Aufsehen gesorgt haben.

Dreh- und Angelpunkt der Band ist der Berner Schlagzeuger und Komponist Clemens Kuratle. Die Kompositionen sind nicht Selbstzweck, sondern entstehen immer auch aus einer Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftspolitischen Fragen. So ist Lumumba dem kongolesischen Panafrikanist und Freiheitskämpfer Patrice Lumumba gewidmet und entstand aus der Auseinandersetzung mit der kolonialen Vergangenheit Europas und deren Folgen für den afrikanischen Kontinent. Bwegshit spiegelt den Zustand von Grossbritannien rund um den Brexit im Grossen und dem britischen Unterhaus im Kleinen wider.

Trotz der geografischen Distanz hat die Band die Coronapandemie überlebt.

Before the pandemic and in the midst of the Brexit turmoil, this band was launched at the Jazzwerkstatt 2019 and unites five extremely independent musicians from England, Ireland and Switzerland, who have caused a stir throughout Europe under their own names and as sidemen or sidewomen.

The lynchpin of the band is the Bernese drummer and composer Clemens Kuratle. The compositions are not an end in themselves but always arise from an examination of socio-political issues. Lumumba, for example, is dedicated to the Congolese Pan-Africanist and freedom fighter Patrice Lumumba and arose out of an examination of Europe’s colonial past and its consequences for the African continent. Bwegshit reflects the state of Great Britain around Brexit on a large scale and the British House of Commons on a small scale.

Despite the geographical distance, the band survived the corona pandemic.
Their debut was released on 19th of August 2022 on Intakt Records.
