Kernstück des Repertoires sind eigene Arrangements und Kompositionen, immer mit der Öffnung in die Improvisation – die Herz und Seele des VokalOrchesters NRW ist. In der Improvisation kann sich die kreative und stimmliche Energie der Sänger:innen voll entfalten: kollektiv, solistisch oder in kleineren Gruppen.

Eine besondere Stärke liegt in den vielseitigen Backgrounds der Mitwirkenden: Profilierte Singer-Songwriter, Solist:innen und Ensemble-Profis aus Jazz und Pop, erfahrene Arrangeur:innen, Ensemble-Leiter:innen und Vocal Coaches bringen ihr ganzes künstlerisches Gewicht in das Stimm-Kollektiv ein.

2018 stand das VokalOrchester NRW beim Jazz-Festival Moers erstmals auf der Bühne. Seitdem begeisterte es das Publikum auf regelmäßigen Tourneen durch NRW und bei Festivalauftritten (VocCologne 2019, TIN-Festival Düsseldorf 2020, wir4Kultur Kultursommer Niederrhein 2021, Approximation Festival Düsseldorf 2021).

Neben den eigenen Projekten arbeitete das VokalOrchester NRW mit Künstler:innen wie dem Trompeter und Komponisten Markus Stockhausen, dem Arrangeur Daniel Mattar oder den Bands Efterklang und Sigur Rós zusammen.

Theo Bleckmann ist ein zweifach für den Grammy® nominierter Jazzsänger und Komponist neuer Musik, dessen vielfältiges Werk Alben mit Las-Vegas-Standards, Weimarer Kunstliedern, A-capella-Solostücken, neu arrangierten Liedern von Charles lves (mit dem Jazz/Rock-Kollektiv Kneebody) und sein hochgelobtes Hello Earth! – The Music of Kate Bush beinhaltet. Dies führte dazu, dass seine Arbeit als „von einem anderen Planeten“ (New York Times), als „magisch, futuristisch“ (AllAboutJazz), „grenzenlos“ (Citypaper, Philadelphia), „transzendent“ (Village Voice) und „brillant“ (New York Magazine) beschrieben wurde.

Bleckmann, der seit 1989 in New York City lebt, hat eine Reihe großartiger Alben veröffentlicht, darunter sein hochgelobtes Hello Earth – the Music of Kate Bush„. In den letzten Jahren war er als special guest auf Aufnahmen von Ambrose Akinmusire für Blue Note Records und dem Julia Hülsmanns Trio für ECM zu hören, 2017 veröffentlichte ECM Theos Aufnahme mit seinem Elegy Quintet, produziert von Manfred Eicher.
In seiner Albumkritik zu Elegy bezeichnete das Wall Street Journal Bleckmann als „A jazz vocalist for the 21st Century„.
Bleckmann arbeitet seit langem mit dem Gitarren-Ikonokraten Ben Monder zusammen – gemeinsam haben sie sechs Alben aufgenommen, ein siebtes ist in Vorbereitung.

Bleckmanns jüngste Veröffentlichung ist This Land (2021), das er mit dem gefeierten Bassquartett The Westerties entwickelt und aufgeführt hat. Theo Bleckmann hat mit Musikern, Tänzern, Künstlern, Schauspielern und Komponisten zusammengearbeitet, darunter Laurie Anderson, Uri Caine, Merce Cunningham, Philip Glass, Ann Hamilton, John Hollenbeck, Sheila Jordan, Phil Kline, Frances MacDormand, Mark Morris, David Lang, Ben Monder, Ulysses Owens, Kenny Wheeler, John Zorn, die Bang on a Can All-Stars, die WDR Big Band und die hr-Radiobigband Frankfurt und vor allem Meredith Monk, mit der Bleckmann seit über 20 Jahren zusammenarbeitet.
Bleckmann wurde von Terry Gross in NPR’s Fresh Air interviewt, trat in der David Letterman Show mit Laurie Anderson auf und spielte als Solist mit der St. Louis Symphonie in der Carnegie Hall in Meredith Monk’s Weave.

The core of the repertoire are own arrangements and compositions, always with the opening into improvisation – which is the heart and soul of the VokalOrchester NRW. In improvisation, the creative and vocal energy of the singers can fully unfold: collectively, soloistically or in smaller groups.

A special strength lies in the versatile backgrounds of the participants: Profiled singer-songwriters, soloists and ensemble professionals from jazz and pop, experienced arrangers, ensemble leaders and vocal coaches bring their full artistic weight to the vocal collective.

In 2018, the VokalOrchester NRW appeared on stage for the first time at the Moers Jazz Festival. Since then, it has thrilled audiences on regular tours through NRW and at festival appearances (VocCologne 2019, TIN Festival Düsseldorf 2020, wir4Kultur Kultursommer Niederrhein 2021, Approximation Festival Düsseldorf 2021).

Bleckmann, who has been residing in New York City since 1989, has released a series of gorgeous and irreverent albums, including his highly acclaimed „Hello Earth – the Music of Kate Bush.“ In recent years, he has appeared as a special guest on recordings by Ambrose Akinmusire for Blue Note Records and Julia Hülsmann’s trio for ECM, and in 2017, ECM released Theo’s recording with his Elegy Quintet, produced by Manfred Eicher.

Bleckmann has a long-standing collaboration with guitar iconoclast Ben Monder – together they have recorded 6 albums with a 7th in the making.
Bleckmann’s latest release is This Land (2021), developed and performed with celebrated bass quartet The Westerties. Theo Bleckmann has performed with musicians, dancers, visual artists, actors and composers, including Laurie Anderson, Uri Caine, Merce Cunningham, Philip Glass, Ann Hamilton, John Hollenbeck, Sheila Jordan, Phil Kline, Frances MacDormand, Mark Morris, David Lang, Ben Monder, Ulysses Owens, Kenny Wheeler, John Zorn, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the WDR Big Band and hr  radio big band Frankfurt and, most prominently, Meredith Monk, with whom Bleckmann has collaborated with for over 20 years.
Bleckmann was interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air, appeared on the David Letterman show with Laurie Anderson and performed as a soloist with the St. Louis Symphonie at Carnegie Hall in Meredith Monks Weave.
In 2015, he premiered his own commission for the American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, and 2016 brought the premieres of two new works to the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics.
