Was ist LiveLooping?
 Mit Hilfe von digitalen LiveLooping-Geräten können Musikerinnen ein paar Sekunden oder Minuten ihrer live gespielten Musik aufnehmen, diese sofort als Schleife (Loop) wiedergeben, dabei auch noch gleichzeitig weiter aufnehmen, so dass immer komplexere Schichten von Klängen entstehen. LiveLooping-Solomusikerinnen können sich auf diese Weise in Echtzeit selbst vervielfältigen; dabei gibt es keine stilistischen Begrenzungen: viele Arten von Musik können mit Hilfe von LiveLooping aufgeführt werden, vom Folksong über Ambient, Rock und Jazz bis zur Avantgarde-Klangforschung. Im Juli 1963 fand das erste LiveLooping-Konzert der Welt statt: der amerikanische Minimalist Terry Riley benutzte bei einem Konzert in Paris zwei Tonbandmaschinen, um den Live-Klang des Chet-Baker-Ensembles zu vervielfältigen. Heute ist LiveLooping eine von vielen Musikerinnen benutzte Technik, ständig kommen neue Loop-Geräte und entsprechende Softwareprodukte auf den Markt. Seit 2000 organisiert Rick Walker in jedem Jahr mehrtägige internationale LiveLooping-Festivals in Kalifornien, auf denen Dutzende von Musiker*innen ausschließlich Musik spielen, in der LiveLooping das zentrale stilistische Element darstellt. Ähnliche, kleinere Festivals gibt es in vielen amerikanischen und europäischen Städten; drei internationale LiveLooping-Festivals haben bisher in Köln stattgefunden (2008 und 2011 jeweils im Kölner LOFT und 2013 in der Alten Feuerwache).

17:00 Michael Peters ist ein Gitarrist aus Köln (er lebt jetzt östlich von Köln auf dem Land, in der Nähe des Ortes, an dem Karlheinz Stockhausen den größten Teil seines Lebens verbrachte). Sein musikalisches Schaffen bewegt sich größtenteils abseits des Mainstreams und lässt sich nur schwer kategorisieren (das WIRE-Magazin hat zwei seiner Alben in der Rubrik „Outer Limits“ besprochen). Der größte Teil von Michaels Gitarrenspiel basiert auf Improvisation und wird in der Regel durch elektronische Effekte, Midi und Livelooping-Techniken erweitert, manchmal unter Verwendung der klassischen „Frippertronics“-Methode, die auf Tape Delay basiert. Seine Solowerke beinhalten Ambient-/Experimental-Gitarrenmusik, aber auch Klangcollagen, algorithmische Musik und Field Recordings. Er hat in Punkbands, Ambient-Projekten, Avant-Rock-Bands und offenen Improvisationsgruppen gespielt.

17:30 Michael Frank spielt seit 1971 Gitarre und gründete 1984 die Band The Absurd. Seit 1997 beschäftigt er sich mit den Möglichkeiten digitaler Loop-Pedale bei Improvisation und Komposition – als Solist oder im
Gruppenkontext. Dabei entstehen Songstrukturen, dissonante Klangfelder oder sphärische Glissandoflächen. Gelegentlich singt Michael Frank dazu.

18:00 Leander Reininghaus: Der Berliner Komponist und Multiinstrumentalist erfüllte sich in seinen 60ern einen Kindheitstraum: Er kaufte sich einen Hardware-Synthesizer. Nachdem er tief in die Eingeweide des neuen Geräts eingetaucht war, stellte er nicht ohne Überraschung fest: Das Ding kann loopen. Jetzt ist er bereit, seine neue fluid-drone-minimalistische Performance auf dem Kölner Loopfestival zu präsentieren, nur mit dem Synthesizer, ohne Pedale oder Apps.

18:30 Raimund Gitsels – Gee and the Plastic Strings: Seit seinem siebten Lebensjahr klassisch ausgebildet, lernte Raimund Gitsels bald, seine Geige mit Tonabnehmern, Effektpedalen und einem Gitarrenverstärker zu bearbeiten. Einige Zeit später pendelte er zwischen Sinfonieorchestern, Punk-, Pop- und Progressiv-Rock-Bands. Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Geigenlehrer spielt Raimund derzeit mit dem E-Geigen-Ensemble „Violet Quartet“, der Industrial Fake Jazz Band „Octafish“ und dem Ambient Electro Duo „MA:RA“. Mit seinem Geigen-Live-Looping-Solo „Gee and the Plastic Strings“ kombiniert er eine Vielzahl von elektrischen Geigenklängen mit loop-phrasierten Songstrukturen und freier noisiger Ambience.

19:00 Julia Kotowski: Beltership erforscht elektroakustische Klanglandschaften in Performances, die den Zuhörer über den Rand der Erdanziehungskraft hinaus tragen. Der Gerätepark besteht größtenteils aus selbstgebauten Instrumenten Geräuschboxen und seltsamen Saiteninstrumenten aus Schrott, der meist auf den Straßen Berlins gefunden wurde – die mit Mikrofonen und Piezoelementen ausgestattet sind und dann durch Effekte und Loop-Maschinen gefüttert werden. Der Prozess und das Ziel, ihn sichtbar zu machen, stehen immer im Mittelpunkt: sowohl bei der Erstellung der Klangskulpturen als auch bei den improvisierten Live-Performances. Beltership ist auf einer bescheidenen, offenen Erkundungsmission und lädt das Publikum ein, mitzukommen. Noch in den Anfängen, doch letztlich vielleicht, um kühn dorthin zu gehen, wo noch niemand zuvor gewesen ist. Mal ein weiter, meditativer Raum, mal ein entropischer Abstieg in den Lärm, dann wieder musikalische Strukturen in Rhythmus und Melodie kurz auftauchen lassend, bevor sie sich wieder auflösen. Beltership versucht, subtile erzählerische Bögen in den vielschichtigen Loopsphären zu finden, die sie erschafft.

19:30 Juan Carrizo ist ein Gitarrist, Komponist und Live-Looping-Künstler aus Patagonien, Argentinien. Seine Musik bewegt sich in einem breiten Spektrum von Genres – von Metal bis Fusion und von Progressive Rock bis zu experimentellen Klanglandschaften. Seine Herangehensweise kombiniert Improvisation mit Live-Technologie und schafft so immersive und dynamische Atmosphären. „dada“ ist Juan Carrizos Live-Looping-Projekt, bei dem er die Interaktion zwischen mit Gitarreneffekten überlagerten Klängen und Echtzeit-Visualisierungen erforscht. Durch eine organische Konstruktion von Loops verschmilzt er elektronische Texturen mit Elementen des Progressive Rock. Jede Performance ist einzigartig und verbindet Improvisationen mit suggestiven Strukturen und einer immersiven audiovisuellen Erfahrung.

20:00 Emmanuel Reveneau: Das „Fumid strain retroactive project“ ist ein Avatar des „Daisy-chain repetitive project“, selbst ein Avatar des „Stupid brain iterative project“, selbst ein Avatar des „Mucid vain hypoactive project“, selbst ein Avatar des „Funky game performative project“, selbst ein Avatar des „Lucid brain integrative project“ … Die Musik konzentriert sich auf Improvisation und Echtzeit-Orchestrierung unter Verwendung einer Grundausstattung an Instrumenten, die alle aus der Vergangenheit stammen, sowie eines Grammophons. Erreicht wird dies durch den Einsatz einer hausgemachten Software namens NOundo, die mit rückwirkenden Prozessen gesättigt ist. Man kann es konkreten Jazz nennen.

What is LiveLooping?
 With the help of digital LiveLooping devices, musicians can record a few seconds or minutes of their live music, play it back immediately as a loop and continue recording at the same time, creating ever more complex layers of sounds. In this way, LiveLooping solo musicians can duplicate themselves in real time; there are no stylistic limitations: many types of music can be performed with the help of LiveLooping, from folk songs to ambient, rock and jazz to avant-garde sound research. The world’s first LiveLooping concert took place in July 1963: the American minimalist Terry Riley used two tape machines to duplicate the live sound of the Chet Baker Ensemble at a concert in Paris. Today, live looping is a technique used by many musicians, and new looping devices and corresponding software products are constantly coming onto the market. Every year since 2000, Rick Walker has organized international LiveLooping festivals in California lasting several days, at which dozens of musicians play music in which LiveLooping is the central stylistic element. There are similar, smaller festivals in many American and European cities; three international LiveLooping festivals have taken place in Cologne so far (2008 and 2011 in Cologne’s LOFT and 2013 in the Alte Feuerwache).

17:00 Michael Peters is a guitarist from Cologne (he now lives east of Cologne in the countryside, close to where Karlheinz Stockhausen spent most of his life). His musical output is largely outside the mainstream and is difficult to categorize (WIRE magazine has reviewed two of his albums in the “Outer Limits” section). Most of Michael’s guitar playing is based on improvisation and is usually augmented by electronic effects, midi and livelooping techniques, sometimes using the classic “Frippertronics” method based on tape delay. His solo works include ambient/experimental guitar music, but also sound collages, algorithmic music and field recordings. He has played in punk bands, ambient projects, avant-rock bands and open improvisation groups.

18:00 Leander Reininghaus: The Berlin composer and multi-instrumentalist fulfilled a childhood dream in his 60s: he bought himself a hardware synthesizer. After delving deep into the bowels of the new device, he was surprised to discover that it could loop. Now he is ready to present his new fluid-drone-minimalist performance at the Cologne Loop Festival, using only the synthesizer, without pedals or apps.

18:30 Raimund Gitsels – Gee and the Plastic Strings: Classically trained since the age of seven, Raimund Gitsels soon learned to work his violin with pickups, effects pedals and a guitar amplifier. Some time later, he shuttled between symphony orchestras, punk, pop and progressive rock bands. In addition to his work as a violin teacher, Raimund currently plays with the electric violin ensemble “Violet Quartet”, the industrial fake jazz band ‘Octafish’ and the ambient electro duo “MA:RA”. With his violin live looping solo “Gee and the Plastic Strings” he combines a variety of electric violin sounds with loop-phrased song structures and free noisy ambience.

19:00 Julia Kotowski: Beltership explores electro-acoustic soundscapes in performances that carry the listener beyond the edge of gravity. The equipment consists largely of homemade instruments, noise boxes and strange stringed instruments made from scrap metal, mostly found on the streets of Berlin – which are equipped with microphones and piezo elements and then fed through effects and loop machines. The process and the goal of making it visible are always at the center: both in the creation of the sound sculptures and in the improvised live performances. Beltership is on a modest, open exploratory mission and invites the audience to come along. Still in its infancy, but ultimately perhaps to boldly go where no one has gone before. Sometimes a vast, meditative space, sometimes an entropic descent into noise, then again allowing musical structures to briefly emerge in rhythm and melody before dissolving again. Beltership attempts to find subtle narrative arcs in the multi-layered loop spheres that she creates.

His approach combines improvisation with live technology to create immersive and dynamic atmospheres. “dada” is Juan Carrizo’s live looping project in which he explores the interaction between sounds layered with guitar effects and real-time visualizations. Through an organic construction of loops, he fuses electronic textures with elements of progressive rock. Each performance is unique and combines improvisation with suggestive structures and an immersive audiovisual experience.
