Matthias Mainz, Gregory Dargent, Anil Eraslan, Maurice Louca, LOFTCollaborations:

“Transcendent beauty in an unholy racket … What could, on paper, be provocatively “difficult” music becomes quite transcendentally beautiful.”
The Guardian

“Egyptian music is currently undergoing an energetic renaissance. Maurice Louca’s second solo album taps into this excitement. By opening up to everything around him, he has crafted remarkable music – dense, driven and splashed with colour.”
The Wire

“Saet El Hazz is experimental and uncompromisingly modern, and yet the reaction it elicits feels timeless and instinctual, playing on our love of suspense and our capacity for joy in a way that only great music can.”
Folk Radio Uk

„Louca’s music works beyond the confines of simple description. Evocative, challenging and a must for the discerning improv/noise/world ear.”
The Quietus

Mainz/Dargent/Eraslan:

Collaborations:
Since 2021 Mainz/Dargent/Eraslan have been collaborating with composers and improvisers. The sound of the trio, which includes piano, cello and oud, receives impulses from the compositions, which sometimes develop dark sound images from a consistent microtonality, as with Zurich’s Edu Haubensak, or move in the border area of composition and improvisation in an electro-acoustic setting, as with Frankfurt’s Orm Finnendahl. Berlin composer and guitarist Marc Sinan has just completed „Kanlı Dere (Deniz Ne Kadar Güzel Hoş)/Der Blutige (Wie schön doch das Meer ist),“ a very personal composition with reference to the Armenian massacre at the beginning of the 20th century.

In parallel, Mainz/Dargent/Eraslan are forming an electro-acoustic version of the ensemble with Cairo-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Maurice Louca in winter 2022. With his Arabic-informed improvisations on microtonally tuned synthesizers and microtonal electric guitar and an electro-acoustic extended setup of piano, cello and oud, the musical reference spaces here sound more like Krautrock, ambient and noise.

Thus, three strands are currently being created in which the acoustic sonority of the trio can unfold in freely improvised polystylistic spaces, in which different compositional approaches can be realized or which, extended by guests in electro-acoustic setups, open up reference spaces to Krautrock, Ambient and Noise.

Egyptian musician and composer Maurice Louca recently released his 4th studio album Saet El Hazz (Northern Spy/Sub Rosa, 2021). In addition, there are countless releases for bands and collaborations in which he is involved, including Dwarfs of East Agouza, Karkhana, Lekhfa, Alif and Bikya. Over the past decade, he has toured extensively in Europe, North Africa North Africa and the Arab world and has collaborated with various art forms – such as dance, visual arts and theater

Mainz/Dargent/Eraslan:
Gregory Dargent and Anil Eraslan had studied classical guitar and cello in Strasbourg before establishing themselves as improvising musicians. Gregory Dargent has since studied North African traditions of the oud extensively, combining them with the transmission of contemporary guitar techniques. Dargent and Eraslan are also involved with analog photography and experimental and documentary film formats. Gregory Dargent published „Book H“ of photographs from three short visits to the sites of French atomic bomb tests with Saturneditions and is currently preparing to publish two more works. Anil Eraslan’s documentary project in development, „Sound Dreams of Istanbul,“ was awarded the Melodika Sound Award at the Istanbul Film Festival in the fall of 2020. After studying jazz trumpet, Matthias Mainz has realized formats between improvised and new music, media art, theater and dance theater as a transdisciplinary musician and curator. In recent years, Mainz has used his autodidactic devotion to the piano to work through his personal musical imprints and implement them in improvisational and compositional contexts.
