Mit Rhythm Riot präsentiert der in Italien lebende deutsche Pianist und Komponist Christian Pabst sein neuestes und mittlerweile sechstes Album.

Das im Kölner LOFT aufgenommene Werk versprüht eine kraftvolle kinetische Energie, die durch das telepathische Zusammenspiel und die einizgartige melodiöse Klangsprache dieses europäischen Klaviertrios der Extraklasse getragen wird.
Während der Entstehung des Albums hat Pabst sich immer wieder mit der Frage konfrontiert, was Musik in einer Welt, die ständig in Flammen steht und voller Konflikte ist, bedeuten kann. Ein Ausspruch Leonard Bernsteins hat ihn dabei begleitet und inspiriert: “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before”.
Und so zelebrieren die neu entstandenen Eigenkompositionen Pabsts einen ganz persönlichen Rhythm Riot: einen rhythmischen Protest, der Musik und Kreativität ganz bewusst als kraftvollen Gegenpol zu den dunklen und zerstörerischen Tendenzen unserer Gesellschaft sieht. Unterstützt wird er hierbei von seinen zwei langjährigen Weggefährten und Veteranen der europäischen Jazzszene. Der JazzEcho-Preisträger André Nendza am Kontrabass und Erik Kooger, einer der gefragtesten Schlagzeuger der Niederlande, vollenden so das perfekt aufeinander eingespielte Trio.
Die internationale Presse beschreibt die Musik des Christian Pabst Trios als eine “Hingabe an die Schönheit der Musik” (All About Jazz, USA). Der in Italien lebende deutsche Pianist und Komponist Christian Pabst ist auf den großen Bühnen anzutreffen (u.a. Lincoln Center New York, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, North Sea Jazz Festival, Bimhuis, etc.) und tourt regelmäßig um die ganze Welt – sowohl in Europa als auch in den USA, Südafrika, Indien, Neuseeland, Australien, Türkei, etc. Er studierte im Rahmen des European Jazz Masters Klavier an den Konservatorien von Amsterdam, Paris und Kopenhagen. Im Anschluss folgte ein Studium der Filmmusik in Amsterdam. Mit seinem preisgekrönten Klaviertrio hat er zahlreiche Erfolge gefeiert. 2011 veröffentlichte er sein Debut „Days of Infinity (feat. Gerard Presencer)“, gefolgt von „Song of Opposites“ in großer Besetzung mit Streichern und Bläsern und dem von der internationalen Presse hoch gelobten Trio Album „Inner Voice“. Der Downbeat-Autor Scott Yanow beschrieb Christian Pabst’s Klavierspiel als „verbunden mit den Großen des Jazz, zugleich originell und persönlich.“ Neben seiner solistischen Tätigkeit ist Pabst ein begehrter Begleiter und hat sich auch durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern wie Lionel Loueke, James Cammack, Lubos Soukup, etc. einen Namen gemacht. Als Arrangeur hat er u.a. für die ARD, das WDR Funkhausorchester, Orkest Phion, Matangi Quartet, etc. gearbeitet.
Der Bassist und Komponist André Nendza gehört durch seine kontinuierliche Arbeit sowohl mit einer Vielzahl eigener Projekte (A.tronic, Duo mit Inga Lühning, Tria Lingvo, Canvas) als auch als gefragter Sideman (u. a. Philipp van Endert Trio, Christian Pabst Trio, Mathias Haus) zu den profiliertesten Musikern der deutschen Musikszene. Nendza studierte an der Hochschule der Künste, Hilversum (NL) und an der Jazzabteilung der Musikhochschule Köln (Diplom 1997). Der Bassist arbeitete live und/oder im Studio mit Musikern wie Dave Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Rick Margitza, Paolo Fresu, Dominique Pifarély, Charlie Mariano, Mike Walker, Eivind Aarset, …). Nendzas Bassspiel ist auf über 80 Tonträgern (davon 14 unter eigenem Namen) sowie im Rahmen diverser Rundfunk- und TV-Mitschnitte dokumentiert worden. André Nendza hat unzählige Konzerte im In- und Ausland gegeben. 1997 wurde Nendza dann mit dem Kulturförderpreis der Sparkassenstiftung NRW ausgezeichnet. 2012 erhält Nendza den ECHOJAZZ in der Kategorie „Bass, national“ für sein Album „Rooms restored“. 2014 gewinnt er mit „Tria Lingvo“ das Finale des „Neuen Deutschen Jazzpreises“.
Erik Kooger ist einer der meist gefragtesten Schlagzeuger der niederländischen Jazzszene. Von 1990 bis 1996 studierte er am königlichen Konservatorium Den Haags. In seiner Laufbahn spielte er u.a. mit Teddy Edwards, Scott Hamilton, Ack van Rooyen, Deborah Carter, Don Braden, Hans Dulder, Sonny Fortune, Ingrid Jensen, Frits Landsbergen, Marije Nie und Edwin Rutten. Seit 2006 arbeitet er mit Pianist Michiel Borstlap zusammen. Erik tourte mit der Band von Pianist und Sänger Gino Vannelli und arbeitete viel mit Gitarrist Jerome Hol, Bas van Lier, Michael Varekamp, The Legends, BOOST! und Christian Pabst. Er war Mitglied der Band CRY BABY! von Dick de Graaf und von 2012 bis 2017 Schlagzeuger der Deeldeliers (mit u.a. Jules Deelder und Bas van Lier).

Recorded at the LOFT in Cologne, the work radiates a powerful kinetic energy, which is carried by the telepathic interplay and the unique melodious sound language of this top-class European piano trio.
During the creation of the album, Pabst repeatedly confronted himself with the question of what music can mean in a world that is constantly on fire and full of conflict. A quote from Leonard Bernstein accompanied and inspired him: “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before”.
And so Pabst’s new compositions celebrate a very personal Rhythm Riot: a rhythmic protest that consciously sees music and creativity as a powerful antithesis to the dark and destructive tendencies of our society. He is supported in this by his two long-time companions and veterans of the European jazz scene. JazzEcho award winner André Nendza on double bass and Erik Kooger, one of the most sought-after drummers in the Netherlands, complete the perfectly coordinated trio.
The international press describes the music of the Christian Pabst Trio as “a surrender to the beauty of music” (All About Jazz, USA). The German magazine Jazzthing praises the ensemble’s innovative way of playing and says: “The resulting sound world has only marginally anything to do with the traditional piano trio rules and the parameters of classical jazz.” Following the success of Balbec, the pianist and his comrades-in-arms are consistently sticking to their artistic path and, with Rhythm Riot, are giving the audience a new exciting chapter in their ever-evolving musical narrative.

German pianist and composer Christian Pabst, who lives in Italy, performs on the world’s great stages (including Lincoln Center New York, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, North Sea Jazz Festival, Bimhuis, etc.) and tours regularly all over the world – both in Europe and in the USA, South Africa, India, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, etc. As part of the European Jazz Masters program, he studied piano at the conservatories of Amsterdam, Paris and Copenhagen. This was followed by a degree in film music in Amsterdam. With his award-winning piano trio, he has celebrated numerous successes. In 2011 he released his debut „Days of Infinity (feat. Gerard Presencer)“, followed by „Song of Opposites“ featuring a large ensemble with strings and brass, and the trio album „Inner Voice“, which was highly praised by the international press. The bassist has worked live and/or in the studio with musicians such as Dave Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Rick Margitza, Paolo Fresu, Dominique Pifarély, Charlie Mariano, Mike Walker, Eivind Aarset, and others. Nendza’s bass playing has been documented on more than 80 recordings (14 of them under his own name) as well as in numerous radio and television broadcasts. André Nendza has given countless concerts at home and abroad. In 1997 Nendza was awarded the Kulturförderpreis of the Sparkassenstiftung NRW. In 2012 Nendza received the ECHO JAZZ in the category „Bass, national“ for his album „Rooms Restored“. In 2014 he won the final of the „Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis“ with „Tria Lingvo“.
Erik Kooger is one of the most sought-after drummers on the Dutch jazz scene. From 1990 to 1996 he studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Over the course of his career he has played with, among others, Teddy Edwards, Scott Hamilton, Ack van Rooyen, Deborah Carter, Don Braden, Hans Dulder, Sonny Fortune, Ingrid Jensen, Frits Landsbergen, Marije Nie and Edwin Rutten. Since 2006 he has worked together with pianist Michiel Borstlap. Erik toured with the band of pianist and singer Gino Vannelli and worked extensively with guitarist Jerome Hol, Bas van Lier, Michael Varekamp, The Legends, BOOST! and Christian Pabst.
