Der US-amerikanische Pianist, Komponist, Arrangeur und Pädagoge Billy Test pendelt zwischen Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten, und ist zur Zeit Pianist in der mit einem Grammy ausgezeichneten WDR Big Band in Köln.
Billy wuchs in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, auf und zog später in die Gegend von New York City, um seinen musikalischen Ambitionen nachzugehen. Während seiner Zeit in der New Yorker Szene trat er in der Carnegie Hall, im Village Vanguard, JALC, Smalls und Mezzrow mit Künstlern wie Dave Liebman, Miho Hazama, Joe Magnarelli, Rich Perry, Joel Frahm, dem Vanguard Jazz Orchestra und unzähligen anderen auf.
Seit September 2018 ist Billy Pianist der mit dem Grammy Award ausgezeichneten WDR Big Band. Unter der Leitung von Chefdirigent Bob Mintzer und Composer in Residence Vince Mendoza hat Billy auf mehreren WDR-Aufnahmen und Radio-/Fernsehsendungen mitgewirkt und ist mit der Band auf einer Vielzahl von führenden europäischen Jazzfestivals aufgetreten, darunter das London Jazz Festival und das Berlin Jazz Festival. Die WDR Big Band hat Test’s Arrangements und Kompositionen gespielt, und seine Fähigkeiten als Solist wurden ausgiebig vorgestellt.
Billy ist ein Absolvent der William Paterson University, wo er unter der Leitung von Mulgrew Miller studierte. Er besitzt einen Master-Abschluss der Manhattan School of Music, wo er bei Jim McNeely und Phil Markowitz studierte. Billy war Finalist bei den American Pianists Awards 2019, erhielt den zweiten Platz bei der Montreux Solo Piano Competition 2017 und war Halbfinalist bei der Nottingham Solo Piano Competition 2012.
Derzeit ist er Fakultätsmitglied am Conservatorium Maastricht.
Bei seinem Solokonzert im Loft kehrt Test zu seinen “Wurzeln” als Solopianist zurück und spielt eine große Bandbreite an Originalen und persönlichen Standards.
Auf dem Programm stehen mehrere Uraufführungen noch nie gehörter Werke von Test sowie freie Improvisationen und unkonventionelle Stücke aus dem großen Kanon des Jazz.
Das Solokonzert bietet die seltene Gelegenheit, Test in einem freieren, offeneren Kontext abseits seiner Arbeit in großen Ensembles mit der WDR Big Band zu hören.

Pennsylvania native Billy Test is a pianist, composer, arranger, and educator. Currently holding the piano chair in the Grammy award winning WDR Big Band in Köln, Germany, Billy splits his time between Europe and the United States, maintaining a busy schedule as a performer, composer, and educator.
Billy grew up in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, later relocating to the New York City area to follow his musical ambitions. During his time on the New York scene, he performed at Carnegie Hall, The Village Vanguard, JALC, Smalls, and Mezzrow with artists including, Dave Liebman, Miho Hazama, Joe Magnarelli, Rich Perry, Joel Frahm, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and countless more. Beyond Manhattan, Billy has played venues including The Kennedy Center and Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., The Deer Head Inn in Delaware Water Gap, PA, and Chris’s Jazz Café in Philadelphia.
Billy has held the piano chair with the Grammy Award Winning WDR Big Band in Köln, Germany since September 2018. Playing under the direction of Chief Conductor Bob Mintzer and Composer in Residence Vince Mendoza, Billy has appeared on several WDR Recordings and radio/television broadcasts and performed with the band at a plethora of leading European jazz festivals, including the London Jazz Festival and the Berlin Jazz Festival. The WDR Big Band has played Test’s arrangements and compositions, and his abilities as a soloist have been extensively featured.
Billy is an alumnus of William Paterson University, where he studied under the tutelage of Mulgrew Miller. He holds a master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music, where he studied under Jim McNeely and Phil Markowitz. Billy was a finalist in the 2019 American Pianists Awards, received second place in the 2017 Montreux Solo Piano Competition, and was a semi-finalist in the 2012 Nottingham Solo Piano Competition. He is currently a faculty member at the Conservatorium Maastricht.
Test’s solo concert at Loft will have him returning to his “roots” as a solo pianist, playing a wide variety of originals and personalised standards. The concert will feature several new premieres of unheard works from Test, as well as free improvisations and off-the-beaten-path tunes from the wide jazz cannon. The solo concert provides a rare opportunity to hear Test in a freer, more open context away from his large ensemble work with the WDR Big Band.
