„The concert was a real triumph. Chaksad’s writing and arranging is first class and the enthusiasm shown by the band was very evident“, schrieb Jazzwise im Januar 2023 über ein Konzert in Island.

For over a decade, Sarah Chaksad has had a significant impact on the European jazz scene with her medium-sized to large ensembles. The Swiss alto and soprano saxophonist, composer, and bandleader is internationally acclaimed for her recordings and concerts. Her music combines compositional precision with emotional depth, structural sophistication with sonic openness. “The concert was a real triumph. Chaksad’s writing and arranging is first-class, and the enthusiasm shown by the band was very evident,” wrote Jazzwise in January 2023 about a concert in Iceland. Jazz Thing noted as early as 2019: “Sarah Chaksad’s pieces skillfully juggle insistent motifs, muted sounds, and gentle layering.” Jazzpodium highlighted her “clever compositional tricks with numerous motivic cross-references, development-like thematic treatment, and finely chiseled, through-composed backgrounds for the improvisations.” Die Weltwoche attested to her “distinctive, subtle musical signature” and drew comparisons to George Gruntz and Mathias Rüegg, while Rondo magazine praised: “Her strength lies in nuanced, well-crafted, carefully considered scores in which she plays virtuosically with the timbres of her ensemble.”
With Sarah Chaksad’s AMELIA, the musician is now embarking on a new chapter.
Chaksad’s compositions are powerful yet delicate, rhythmically incisive, melodically fluid, and rich in surprising twists. It is precisely where her carefully constructed structures meet the individual musicians’ styles that the music unfolds its special energy. It takes flight: it breathes, intensifies, opens up spaces, and develops an intensity that feels both sustained and forward-driving.
The exceptional quality of AMELIA stems in no small part from the unique artistic personalities of the musicians involved. German saxophonist and bass clarinetist Fabian Willmann is one of the most distinguished voices of his generation, captivating audiences with his lyrical expressiveness, stylistic versatility, and depth of improvisation. Swiss trombonist Andreas Tschopp combines tonal warmth with great virtuosity and is in high demand far beyond his country’s borders, both as a soloist and as a composer. Norwegian pianist Espen Berg is one of Scandinavia’s leading jazz musicians and captivates audiences with his creative, energetic, and at the same time highly sensitive playing. Swiss double bassist Lukas Traxel is a defining figure on the European jazz scene and provides the music with a solid foundation through his powerful tone and melodic creativity. German drummer Eva Klesse is among the most significant European jazz drummers of her generation; her multifaceted, nuanced playing captivates with its precision, awareness of sound, and great musical sensitivity.
