Der finnische Gitarrist Kalle Kalima traf in Berlin den Kontrabassisten Oliver Potratz und den Schlagzeuger Oliver Steidle. Diese drei wurden Gefährten auf einer musikalischen Reise, die bisher 25 Jahre andauert. Sie haben ihren eigenen Sound definiert, und fordern solide die Grenzen der musikalischen Möglichkeiten der Trio-Formation heraus.
Die musikalische Kombination von Einflüssen aus Finnland und Berlin ergibt eine ursprüngliche, wilde, kreative Jazz-Musik. Klima Kalima verwendet Elemente aus Rock, Blues und Folk, um ihrem modernen Jazz- Sound mit manchem Augenzwinkern einen skurrilen Akzent zu geben. Das Album Finn Noir erschien 2013 bei dem Label Enja Records und das Live-Album Live on Planet Berlin im Jahr 2022. Diese und ihre früheren Alben Loru, Chasing Yellow und Helsinki on my mind ernteten international sehr gute Kritiken. Sie gewannen den Neuen Deutschen Jazzpreis im Jahr 2008 und geben europaweit Konzerte.
Das neueste Album Voyager Blues erschien im Herbst 2025. In diesem Projekt geht es um die Zwillingssonden Voyager 1 und 2, die sich in der Grenzzone des Sonnensystems befinden. Nach und nach werden die Instrumente an Bord abgeschaltet. So verbleibt für die übrigen Geräte hoffentlich genügend Energie für einen Betrieb bis etwa um das jahr 2030. Um diese sterbenden Sonden geht es in diesem musikalischen Projekt Voyagers Blues in dem die Band Klima Kalima den Soundtrack zu einem imaginären Film über die sterbenden und immer einsamer werdenden Sonden spielt. Es passt auch zum Lebensstil der drei Musiker, die auch verdammt sind, lebenslang unterwegs zu sein. Das Trio hat in über 25 Jahren harter Arbeit durch unendliche Zyklen von komponieren, proben, live spielen und aufnehmen ihre Sprache entwickelt. In diesem Projekt kehrt die Gruppe zu ihren musikalischen Ursprüngen zurück. Diese freiere musikalische Sprache ist beim Voyager Blues notwendig, um die endlose Einsamkeit der Sonden zu spiegeln und lässt noch mehr Platz für Ideen und Dialoge für die Drei Musiker. Musikalisch steht dieses Mal eine erzählerische melodische Sprache im Mittelpunkt. Grundkonzept dafür ist der Blues, die Einfachheit und Klarheit vom einsamen Sterben. Dazu Melodien und polyrhythmische Layers, aber rockig ausgedrückt und in ständigen Dialogen zwischen den Spielern.
Kalle Kalima hat vor seinem Studium an der Berliner Hanns Eisler Musikhochschule auch an der Sibelius-Akademie in Helsinki studiert. Er ist Mitglied von Johnny La Marama, Jazzanova Live und Jimi Tenor/Tony Allen Band. Er hat mit Tomasz Stanko, Marc Ducret, Linda Sharrock, Anthony Braxton, Ed Schuller, Juhani Aaltonen und Sirone gespielt.
Oliver Potratz hat Bass an der UdK in Berlin studiert. Er spielte mit Carsten Daerr Trio, Rosa Rauschen, Peter Fulda, John Schröder, Hayden Chisholm, Rolf Kühn, Tomasz Stanko, Gitte Haenning, Christopher Lauer, Johannes Lauer, Christopher Dell und Daniel Erdmann.

Oliver Steidle ist der Anführer der Band „SoKo Steidle“ und Mitglied der bekannten Band „Der Rote Bereich“. Er spielte mit Louis Sclavis, Tomasz Stanko, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Sean Bergin, Simon Nabatov, Richie Beirach. Er gewann den „Neuen Deutschen Jazzpreis“ zweimal, 2006 und 2008 und den Preis für den besten Solisten beim „Neuen Deutschen Jazzpreis“ im Jahr 2008.

Da war noch nichts, die Pandemie höchstens eine schräge Ahnung und das Aufsturz in Berlin bereit für eine Hörrauschreise. Im Januar 2020 gaben sich dort Kalle Kalima, Oliver Potratz und Oliver Steidle die Ehre und holten aus der Idee des Gitarrentrios heraus, was die freegeschulte und rockgeprägte Kombination hergab. Monkisch im fröhlich verstockten Geist, aber nicht im Repertoire, entwickelten die drei ein prall gefülltes Programm der Verzerrungen, Zuspitzungen und Übertreibungen, angeführt von Kalimas rauer, Effekte wild und offensiv einsetzender Gitarre, einerseits tief im Blues, Country Rock und Fusion verwurzelt, auf der anderen Seite ständig die Aura relativierend, kommentierend, zersägend. Potratz und Steidle hielten pulsend und energetisch nachdrücklich dagegen. Es entstand eine Live-Wucht, die man sich vor Ort eigentlich nur schweißdampfend, trancehaft abhebend vorstellen kann. Damals, als man sich einfach so in Musik fallen ließ.

„Während es draußen stürmte und donnerte, begab sich Kalima in den Flottmannhallen musikalisch in astronautische Höhen, betrachtete etwa die unfassbar lange Zeitspanne, in denen Kometen um die Erde kreisen. Finnish guitarist Kalle Kalima met double bassist Oliver Potratz and drummer Oliver Steidle in Berlin. The three became companions on a musical journey that has now lasted 25 years. They have defined their own sound and are consistently pushing the boundaries of what is musically possible within the trio format. The musical blend of influences from Finland and Berlin results in an original, wild, and creative style of jazz. Kalle Kalima incorporates elements of rock, blues, and folk to give their modern jazz sound a whimsical twist with a touch of humor. The album “Finn Noir” was released in 2013 on the Enja Records label, and the live album “Live on Planet Berlin” in 2022. These albums, along with their earlier releases “Loru,” “Chasing Yellow,” and “Helsinki on My Mind,” have received excellent international reviews. They won the “New German Jazz Prize” in 2008 and perform concerts throughout Europe.
The new album Voyager Blues was released in the fall of 2025. This project is about the twin probes Voyager 1 and 2, which are located at the edge of the solar system. The instruments on board are gradually being shut down. Hopefully, this will leave enough energy for the remaining equipment to operate until around the year 2030. This musical project, “Voyager Blues,” centers on these dying probes, with the band Klima Kalima performing the soundtrack to an imaginary film about the dying and increasingly lonely probes. It also fits the lifestyle of the three musicians, who are likewise doomed to be on the road for the rest of their lives. Over more than 25 years of hard work—through endless cycles of composing, rehearsing, performing live, and recording—the trio has developed its own musical language. In this project, the group returns to its musical roots. This freer musical language is essential for “Voyager Blues” to reflect the endless loneliness of the probes and leaves even more room for ideas and dialogue among the three musicians. Musically, the focus this time is on a narrative, melodic language.
The underlying concept is the blues – the simplicity and clarity of dying alone. This is complemented by melodies and polyrhythmic layers, but expressed in a rock style and through constant dialogue between the musicians.
Before studying at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin, Kalle Kalima also studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He is a member of Johnny La Marama, Jazzanova Live, and the Jimi Tenor/Tony Allen Band. He has performed with Tomasz Stanko, Marc Ducret, Linda Sharrock, Anthony Braxton, Ed Schuller, Juhani Aaltonen, and Sirone.
Oliver Potratz studied bass at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). He has played with the Carsten Daerr Trio, Rosa Rauschen, Peter Fulda, John Schröder, Hayden Chisholm, Rolf Kühn, Tomasz Stanko, Gitte Haenning, Christopher Lauer, Johannes Lauer, Christopher Dell, and Daniel Erdmann.
Oliver Steidle is the leader of the band “SoKo Steidle” and a member of the well-known band “Der Rote Bereich.” He has performed with Louis Sclavis, Tomasz Stanko, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Sean Bergin, Simon Nabatov, and Richie Beirach. He won the “New German Jazz Prize” twice, in 2006 and 2008, and the award for best soloist at the “New German Jazz Prize” in 2008.

Back then, there was nothing yet – the pandemic was at most a vague premonition—and the Aufsturz in Berlin was ready for a wild auditory journey. In January 2020, Kalle Kalima, Oliver Potratz, and Oliver Steidle graced the stage there and drew from the concept of the guitar trio everything that this free-jazz-trained, rock-influenced combination had to offer. Monk-like in their cheerfully obstinate spirit—though not in their repertoire—the three developed a jam-packed program of distortions, intensifications, and exaggerations, led by Kalima’s raw guitar, which employed effects wildly and aggressively—on the one hand deeply rooted in blues, country rock, and fusion, and on the other hand constantly relativizing, commenting on, and dismantling that aura. Potratz and Steidle countered this with pulsating, energetic, and emphatic energy. The result was a live force that one can really only imagine experiencing in person—sweat-drenched and in a trance-like state of euphoria. Back then, when people would just let themselves be swept away by the music.
