Im Oktober 1976 erschien meine erste Schallplatte New Movements auf dem legendären Label Free Music Production – hervorgegangen aus dem Konzertmitschnitt meines damaligen Quintetts im Berliner Quartier Latin vom April desselben Jahres, ca 2 Monate vor meinem 20. Geburtstag. Inzwischen ist meine Diskographie auf über 50 Tonträger angewachsen, ein nicht unbeträchtlicher Teil davon aufgenommen im LOFT seit den frühen 1990er Jahren. Anlass genug in meinem 70. Lebensjahr (…wie die Zeit vergeht …) dortselbst an zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen einen ausschnitthaften Einblick in den aktuellen Stand meiner musikalischen Verwicklungen zu geben.
Flankiert und herausgefordert werde ich dabei von Laura Strobl und Mark Sanders im Trio ACUTANCE, das Ende März in London debutierte und am zweiten Tag um Frank Gratkowski und Joe Williamson zum Quintett erweitert wird.

Georg Graewe, geboren 1956 in Bochum, ist einer der eigenwilligsten Pianisten und Komponisten der europäischen Improvisationsszene. Autodidakt, der über die Gitarre zum Klavier fand – und seither eine Sprache entwickelt hat, die zwischen äußerster Verdichtung und radikaler Stille pendelt. Sein Satz: „Als Komponist improvisiere ich, als Improvisateur komponiere ich“ beschreibt sein Denken präziser als jede Stilzuordnung.
Graewe bewegt sich im Schnittfeld von Free Jazz und zeitgenössischer Komposition, aktuell im Trio mit Brad Jones & Hamid Drake, mit ACUTANCE sowie dem SONIC FICTION ORCHESTRA.

Laura Strobl studiert derzeit Neue Musik bei Pauline Sachse (Viola) und Manos Tsangaris (Komposition) an der Musikhochschule Dresden. Bereits während ihres Studiums in Wien wandte sie sich der zeitgenössischen Musik, der Freien Improvisation und der Live-Elektronik zu. Zudem absolvierte sie ein Privatstudium bei Martin Siewert und war im Rahmen dessen an zahlreichen Projekten als Poduktions- und Tontechnikassistentin beteiligt. Die experimentierfreudige Bratschistin spielt in diversen Formationen wie dem Sonic Fiction Orchestra, hypergol, dem Contemporary Insights Ensemble oder dem Baby Sommer Kiecktett. Im zeitgenössischen Musiktheater tritt sie als Librettistin und Komponistin in Erscheinung. Darüber hinaus ist sie Direktionsassistentin beim Label Random Acoustics. Laura Strobl lebt in Dresden, Wien und der Hallertau.
Mark Sanders, geboren 1960 in Beckenham, Kent, ist einer der prägenden Schlagzeuger der europäischen improvisierten Musik. Sein Spiel verbindet höchste technische Präzision mit einer außergewöhnlichen Fähigkeit zuzuhören — er reagiert, formt, lässt Raum. Sanders bewegt sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen freier Improvisation und zeitgenössischem Jazz, immer auf der Suche nach dem Moment, der sich nicht wiederholt.
htigsten künstlerischen Partner sind Evan Parker, Wadada Leo Smith und Roscoe Mitchell — Namen, die das Koordinatensystem seiner Arbeit beschreiben. Als Mitglied des London Improvisers Orchestra hat er die Kollektivimprovisation mitgeprägt. Zuletzt erschienen Ghost Dance und Sensitive to Light (beide 2023), die seine Reife als Musiker dokumentieren. 2024 wurde er mit dem Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award ausgezeichnet.
Frank Gratkowski, geboren am 30. März 1963 in Hamburg, ist Klarinettist und Saxophonist. Er studierte an der Hamburger Musikhochschule, dann Saxophon von 1985 bis 1990 bei Heiner Wiberny in Köln; weitere Impulse erhielt er von Charlie Mariano, Sal Nistico und Steve Lacy. Seine Klangsprache arbeitet mit erweiterten Spieltechniken, mikrotonalen Konzepten und räumlicher Musik – Mittel, die bei ihm strukturell denken, nicht dekorativ. Seit 1992 verbindet ihn eine intensive Zusammenarbeit mit dem Pianisten Georg Graewe; ihr Trio mit dem Schlagzeuger Paul Lovens besteht seit 1999. Zu seinen weiteren Partnern zählen Achim Kaufmann, Gerry Hemingway und Wilbert de Joode. Er lehrt an Musikhochschulen in Köln, Hannover und Berlin.
Joe Williamson, geboren 1970 in Vancouver, ist Bassist und eine prägende Figur der europäischen freien Improvisationsszene. Er studierte ab 1989 Musik an der McGill University in Montreal und kam 1992 nach Amsterdam – Beginn einer Wanderbewegung, die ihn über Berlin und London nach Stockholm führte, wo er heute lebt. Als Begleiter und Gleichberechtigter bewegt er sich durch unterschiedlichste Konstellationen: das Tobias Delius Quartet mit Tristan Honsinger und Han Bennink, die Fire! Orchestra, das Rocktrio Receptacles und zahlreiche Duos. Zu seinen wichtigsten Partnern zählen Evan Parker, Ab Baars, François Houle und Jon Rose. 2003 erschien mit „The Ungrateful Carjacker“ sein erstes Soloalbum.

In October 1976, my first album, New Movements, was released on the legendary Free Music Production label – based on a live recording of my quintet at the time at Berlin’s Quartier Latin in April of that same year, about two months before my 20th birthday. My discography has since grown to over 50 recordings, a significant portion of which have been recorded at the LOFT since the early 1990s. Reason enough, in my 70th year (…how time flies…), to offer a selective glimpse into the current state of my musical endeavors there over two consecutive days. I’ll be joined and challenged by Laura Strobl and Mark Sanders in the trio ACUTANCE, which made its debut in London at the end of March and will be expanded into a quintet on the second day with the addition of Frank Gratkowski and Joe Williamson.

Georg Graewe, born in 1956 in Bochum, is one of the most singular pianists and composers in the European improvisation scene. Self-taught, he came to the piano via the guitar — and has since developed a language that oscillates between extreme density and radical silence. His statement: „As a composer I improvise, as an improviser I compose“ describes his thinking more precisely than any stylistic label. Graewe operates at the intersection of free jazz and contemporary composition; he currently performs in a trio with Brad Jones and Hamid Drake, with ACUTANCE, and with the SONIC FICTION ORCHESTRA.

Laura Strobl is currently studying New Music with Pauline Sachse (viola) and Manos Tsangaris (composition) at the Dresden University of Music. Mark Sanders, born in 1960 in Beckenham, Kent, is one of the defining drummers of European improvised music. His playing combines the highest technical precision with an exceptional capacity to listen — he responds, shapes, leaves space. Sanders moves in the tension between free improvisation and contemporary jazz, always in search of the moment that does not repeat itself.
His most important artistic partners are Evan Parker, Wadada Leo Smith, and Roscoe Mitchell — names that map the coordinates of his work. As a member of the London Improvisers Orchestra he has helped shape collective improvisation. Most recently, Ghost Dance and Sensitive to Light (both 2023) appeared, documenting his maturity as a musician. In 2024 he was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award.
Frank Gratkowski, born on March 30, 1963, in Hamburg, is a clarinetist and saxophonist. He studied at the Hamburg University of Music and Performing Arts, then studied saxophone with Heiner Wiberny in Cologne from 1985 to 1990; he was further influenced by Charlie Mariano, Sal Nistico, and Steve Lacy. His musical language incorporates extended playing techniques, microtonal concepts, and spatial music—elements that serve a structural purpose in his work rather than a decorative one. Since 1992, he has maintained an intensive collaboration with pianist Georg Graewe; their trio with drummer Paul Lovens has been active since 1999. His other collaborators include Achim Kaufmann, Gerry Hemingway, and Wilbert de Joode. He teaches at music conservatories in Cologne, Hanover, and Berlin.
Joe Williamson, born in Vancouver in 1970, is a bassist and a leading figure in the European free improvisation scene. He began studying music at McGill University in Montreal in 1989 and moved to Amsterdam in 1992—the start of a journey that took him via Berlin and London to Stockholm, where he lives today. As an accompanist and equal partner, he moves through a wide variety of ensembles: the Tobias Delius Quartet with Tristan Honsinger and Han Bennink, the Fire! Orchestra, the rock trio Receptacles, and numerous duos. His most important collaborators include Evan Parker, Ab Baars, François Houle, and Jon Rose. His first solo album, *The Ungrateful Carjacker*, was released in 2003.
