Felix Henkelhausen, 1995 in Oldenburg geboren, erhielt klassischen Klavier- und Cellounterricht, bevor sein Interesse für den Kontrabass geweckt wurde. Mit 16 Jahren begann er das Jungstudium an der HfK Bremen bei Prof. Detlev Beier. 2014 folgte das Studium am Jazz-Institut Berlin bei Prof. Greg Cohen und Marc Muellbauer, das er 2019 erfolgreich beendete. Trotz seines jungen Alters spielte Henkelhausen bereits mit national und international bekannten KünstlerInnen wie Andrea Parkins, Dave Liebmann, Eric McPherson, Gebhard Ullmann, Hubert Nuss, Jim Black, Jochen Rueckert, Kathrin Pechlof, Lotte Anker, Marc Copland, Nate Wooley, Oli Steidle, Pablo Held, Peter Schlamp, Philipp Gropper’s Philm, Toby Delius und vielen anderen.
Henkelhausen ist Teil von zahlreichen Bands wie Liun and the Science Fiction Orchestra, Lorenz Kellhuber Trio, Stefan Schultze Large, Jim and the Shrimps, Bram de Looze Trio feat. Eric McPherson, Nate Wooley’s Knknighgh und Tau5. Im Februar 2023 wurde er für den Deutschen Jazzpreis in der Kategorie Bass nomminiert (Verkündung der Gewinner*innen Ende April 2023).

Die Idee zur Gründung eines Quintetts beschäftigt Henkelhausen bereits seit 2016, als er beginnt, anlässlich eines Konzertes Stücke für ein fünfköpfiges Ensemble zu schreiben. Die nun auf dem Album enthaltenen Kompositionen spiegeln somit die musikalische und kompositorische Entwicklung wider, die Henkelhausen seitdem durchlaufen ist, lassen gleichzeitig aber auch einen Blick in die Zukunft zu.
Mit Misanthropic Tendencies erschien im November 2021 Felix‘ Debütalbum des als Bandleader und Komponist.
Henkelhausen stellt sich auf diesem Album nicht in den Vordergrund, es geht ihm viel mehr um das Erschaffen einer musikalischen Gestalt, eines Klangkörpers, der nicht auf ein Individuum festgemacht werden kann, sondern nur durch die Konstellation der fünf Protagonisten zustande kommt.
Der Albumtitel zielt auf ein gekränktes Verhältnis zur Menschheit, auf die Grausamkeiten, die diese Spezies im Stande ist zu begehen. Gleichzeitig geht es Henkelhausen aber auch um die Liebe zu Menschen und das Potenzial der schöpferischen Kraft jedes Individuums sowie das Potenzial zu einer besseren Gesellschaft und einem gewaltfreien, liebevollen Miteinander. Diese Ambivalenz sucht er in seinen Stücken zu vermitteln und durch die Mischung von Melodik und rhythmischer sowie harmonischer Rohheit zu verdeutlichen. So zieht sich ein melancholischer Unterton durch seine Stücke, eine Art Schleier oder Schatten, der auf oder unter der Schönheit aber auch Direktheit und Ehrlichkeit der Aufnahmen liegt.

Felix Henkelhausen, born in Oldenburg in 1995, received classical piano and cello lessons before his interest in the double bass was awakened. At the age of 16, he began his junior studies at the HfK Bremen with Prof. Detlev Beier. In 2014, he followed this with studies at the Jazz Institute Berlin with Prof. Greg Cohen and Marc Muellbauer, which he successfully completed in 2019. Despite his young age, Henkelhausen has already played with nationally and internationally known artists such as Andrea Parkins, Dave Liebmann, Eric McPherson, Gebhard Ullmann, Hubert Nuss, Jim Black, Jochen Rueckert, Kathrin Pechlof, Lotte Anker, Marc Copland, Nate Wooley, Oli Steidle, Pablo Held, Peter Schlamp, Philipp Gropper’s Philm, Toby Delius and many others.

The idea of forming a quintet has been on Henkelhausen’s mind since 2016, when he began writing pieces for a five-piece ensemble on the occasion of a concert. The compositions now included on the album thus reflect the musical and compositional development that Henkelhausen has undergone since then, but at the same time also allow a glimpse into the future.
With Misanthropic Tendencies, Felix’s debut album as a bandleader and composer was released in November 2021.
Henkelhausen does not put himself in the foreground on this album, he is much more concerned with creating a musical shape, a body of sound that cannot be pinned down to an individual, but only comes about through the constellation of the five protagonists.
The album title aims at an offended relationship to humanity, at the cruelties that this species is capable of committing. At the same time, however, Henkelhausen is also concerned with the love of people and the potential of the creative power of each individual, as well as the potential for a better society and a non-violent, loving coexistence. He seeks to convey this ambivalence in his pieces and to make it clear through the mixture of melodicism and rhythmic as well as harmonic rawness. Thus, a melancholic undertone runs through his pieces, a kind of veil or shadow that lies on or under the beauty of the music.
