Als Sammlung von Weiskopf-Originalen (und einem Standard) zeigt es die kraftvolle Chemie\, die Weiskopf mit dem Pianisten Carl Winther\, dem Bassisten Andreas Lang und dem Schlagzeuger Anders Mogensen verbindet – gepaart mit ihrer hörbaren Freude\, wieder zusammen zu sein.\nDas Album ist die sechste Veröffentlichung des gefeierten Quartetts\, das Weiskopf im Winter 2017 für eine kurze Europatournee zusammengestellt hatte\, sich aber schnell zu seiner regulären Arbeitsband entwickelte (wenn er nicht gerade mit Steely Dan\, Weiskopfs anderem festen Auftritt\, unterwegs war). Die Winter-Europatour wurde zu einer jährlichen Tradition – obwohl 2020 ihr letzter persönlicher Gipfel seit zwei Jahren war (die Veröffentlichung Introspection 2.0 im Jahr 2021 wurde aus der Ferne aufgenommen\, mit Weiskopf auf der anderen Seite des Atlantiks von seinen Bandkollegen.) Als sich im Januar 2022 endlich wieder die Gelegenheit bot\, waren sie mehr als bereit\, sie zu ergreifen.\n„Wieder zusammen zu spielen war freudig\, kreativ und produktiv; und was für eine Erleichterung\, endlich den Anschein von Ganzheit zu spüren“\, schreibt Weiskopf in den Liner Notes. „Nach unseren ersten Konzerten war ich aufgeregt und inspiriert\, während einer Zugfahrt von Belgien nach Deutschland neues Material zu schreiben. Mir wurde klar\, dass wir jetzt genug Musik hatten\, um eine Aufnahme wirklich lohnenswert zu machen.“\nDer Titel Diamonds and Other Jewels ist eine direkte Anspielung auf tatsächliche Songtitel\, darunter den schillernden Walzer Black Diamond; das nachdenkliche\, aber emotional aufgeladene Blood Diamond\, und die herbstliche Ballade Other Jewels. Aber es könnte durchaus die Gesamtqualität der acht Stücke des Albums beschreiben. Zu den funkelnden Schätzen gehören Widmungen an zwei von Weiskopfs Mentoren: Thad Nation\, eine farbenfrohe Hommage an den Komponisten\, Arrangeur und (Co-)Bandleader Thad Jones sowie den Arthur Johnston-Sam Coslow-Klassiker My Old Flame\, der dem verstorbenen großen Altsaxophonisten Andy Fusco gewidmet ist.\nDiese Stücke sind straff\, die meisten davon etwa sechs Minuten lang. Das ist ein eindrucksvoller Beweis dafür\, wie eng die Band selbst bleibt\, sowohl was ihre persönlichen Bindungen als auch ihre musikalische Disziplin angeht. Juli 1959 in Augusta\, Georgia\, als Sohn eines Vaters geboren\, dessen Arbeit als Arzt durch sein Streben nach klassischem Klavier kompensiert wurde. Seine beiden Söhne – Walt und der Pianist Joel – traten in seine formell ausgebildeten Fußstapfen. Als er 1980 seinen Abschluss an der Eastman School of Music machte\, befand sich Weiskopf jedoch fest im Jazzlager.\nEr startete seine Karriere in der Big Band von Buddy Rich\, wechselte einige Jahre später zum Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra und begann sich dort einen Solo-Ruf aufzubauen. Seine ersten beiden Alben als Bandleader\, Exact Science von 1989 und Mindwalking von 1990\, brachten ihn beide an die Spitze eines Quartetts mit seinem Bruder Joel\, dem Bassisten Jay Anderson und dem Schlagzeuger Jeff Hirshfield.\nVon da an war Weiskopf Leiter und trat mit einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Ensembles auf\, nahm über einen Zeitraum von 15 Jahren von 1992 bis 2007 elf Alben auf und pflegte gleichzeitig einen gesunden freiberuflichen Kalender in der kommerziellen Welt der New Yorker Studioszene\, den Broadway-Showpit-Orchestern sowie die Akiyoshi-Band\, das Frank Sinatra-Orchester und seine namhaften Piers\, darunter unter anderem Renee Rosnes\, Conrad Herwig\, Jim Snidero\, John Fedchock und Billy Drummond. Im Jahr 2003 erhielt er den Ruf\, sich Steely Dan anzuschließen und ist seitdem Teil des Jazz-Rock-Ensembles.\nWeiskopf stellte sein europäisches Quartett 2017 zusammen und sprintete nur eine Woche lang durch Skandinavien und Norddeutschland – gewann aber so viel Schwung\, dass der Saxophonist sie auf einem selbstbetitelten Album dokumentieren konnte. Aber eine einzige Aufnahme konnte die kreative Energie der Band nicht fassen: Auf European Quartet folgten 2019 Worldwide\, 2020 Introspection und 2021 Introspection 2.0 sowie die Feiertags-EP A Little Christmas Music\, bevor sie im Januar 2022 Diamonds and Other Jewels veröffentlichten.\nWalt bringt es auf den Punkt: „Das ist es\, was ich schon immer machen wollte – mit gleichgesinnten Musikern zusammenzuarbeiten\, Musik zu schreiben\, sie zu teilen und auf der ganzen Welt aufzutreten\, das ist die Verwirklichung meines beruflichen Traums.“ \n\nKlingt so: \n\n\nWalt Weiskopf – saxophone\nCarl Winther – piano\nAndreas Lang – bass\nAnders Mogensen – drums \nFrom January 2024 on\, the concerts at the LOFT start round 8.00 pm\nExceptions – e.g. on Sundays – are possible.\nFurther information about prices\, ticket reservations and our opening times can be found here. \nAffected by the COVID-19 pandemic\, tenor saxophonist Walt Weiskopf and his European Quartet returned with a vengeance on Diamonds and Other Jewels (recorded live at LOFT). A collection of Weiskopf originals (and one standard)\, it showcases the powerful chemistry Weiskopf shares with pianist Carl Winther\, bassist Andreas Lang and drummer Anders Mogensen – coupled with their audible joy at being together again.\nThe album is the sixth release from the acclaimed quartet\, which Weiskopf put together for a short European tour in the winter of 2017\, but quickly evolved into his regular working band (when he wasn’t on the road with Steely Dan\, Weiskopf’s other regular gig). The winter European tour became an annual tradition – although 2020 was their last in-person peak in two years (the 2021 release Introspection 2.0 was recorded remotely\, with Weiskopf on the other side of the Atlantic from his bandmates). When the opportunity finally presented itself again in January 2022\, they were more than ready to seize it. \n„Playing together again was joyful\, creative and productive; and what a relief to finally feel some semblance of wholeness\,“ writes Weiskopf in the liner notes. „After our first concerts\, I was excited and inspired to write new material during a train ride from Belgium to Germany. I realized that we now had enough music to make a recording really worthwhile.“\nThe title Diamonds and Other Jewels is a direct reference to actual song titles\, including the dazzling waltz Black Diamond; the pensive but emotionally charged Blood Diamond\, and the autumnal ballad Other Jewels. But it could well describe the overall quality of the album’s eight tracks. Among the sparkling treasures are dedications to two of Weiskopf’s mentors: Thad Nation\, a colorful tribute to composer\, arranger and (co-)bandleader Thad Jones\, and the Arthur Johnston-Sam Coslow classic My Old Flame\, dedicated to the late great alto saxophonist Andy Fusco.\nThese pieces are tight\, most of them around six minutes long. It’s an impressive testament to how tight the band itself remains\, both in terms of their personal bonds and their musical discipline. In these short periods of time\, these musicians say an enormous amount. \nWalt Weiskopf was born on July 30\, 1959\, in Augusta\, Georgia\, to a father whose work as a physician was offset by his pursuit of classical piano. His two sons – Walt and pianist Joel – followed in his formally trained footsteps. By the time he graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 1980\, however\, Weiskopf was firmly in the jazz camp.\nHe started his career in Buddy Rich’s big band\, moved to the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra a few years later and began to build a solo reputation there. His first two albums as a bandleader\, Exact Science in 1989 and Mindwalking in 1990\, both saw him leading a quartet with his brother Joel\, bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Jeff Hirshfield.\nFrom then on\, Weiskopf led and performed with a variety of different ensembles\, recording 11 albums over a 15-year period from 1992 to 2007\, while maintaining a healthy freelance calendar in the commercial world of the New York studio scene\, Broadway showpit orchestras\, as well as the Akiyoshi Band\, the Frank Sinatra Orchestra and his notable piers\, including Renee Rosnes\, Conrad Herwig\, Jim Snidero\, John Fedchock and Billy Drummond\, among others. In 2003\, he received the call to join Steely Dan and has been part of the jazz-rock ensemble ever since. \nWeiskopf put together his European quartet in 2017 and sprinted through Scandinavia and northern Germany for just one week – but gained enough momentum for the saxophonist to document it on a self-titled album. But a single recording could not contain the band’s creative energy: European Quartet was followed by 2019’s Worldwide\, 2020’s Introspection and 2021’s Introspection 2.0\, as well as the holiday EP A Little Christmas Music\, before releasing Diamonds and Other Jewels in January 2022.\nWalt sums it up: „This is what I’ve always wanted to do – collaborating with like-minded musicians\, writing music\, sharing it and performing all over the world\, it’s the realization of my professional dream.“
