Kuljić & Kaufmann live @ PLUSHMUSIC Festival\, 22.09.2023\nDuke Ellington (1899-1974) und Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967) gehören zu den bedeutendsten Komponist*innen des Jazz. Ihre Musik war die populäre Musik ihrer Zeit – der Swing-Ära – und Ellington wurde der Mozart des Jazz genannt. Jelena Kuljić spielt schon seit über 10 Jahren mit Frank Gratkowski\, meist rockigere Projekte\, und die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Achim Kaufmann und Frank Gratkowski geht zurück bis in die 80ger Jahre als beide an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln studierten.\nSie alle teilen eine große Liebe zur Musik Ellington und Strayhorns\, was sie dazu veranlasste das Projekt Something to Live For zu nennen. \n\nIm zweiten Teil des Abends treffen Improvisation\, Groove und Klangforschung aufeinander. The Resonators verbinden Jazz\, Avantgarde und lyrische Kraft zu einem intensiven musikalischen Erlebnis. Die Stimme von Jelena Kuljić – kraftvoll\, nuanciert\, unverwechselbar – steht im Zentrum dieses energiegeladenen Kollektivs.\nUrsprünglich als Experiment des Bassisten Reza Askari entstanden\, haben The Resonators einen neuen\, eigenen Sound entwickelt\, dessen Amalgamisierung von Free Jazz und Rock-Elementen schnell zum Markenzeichen der Band wurde. Besonders die Einflüsse des Psychedelic Rock der späten 60er und früher 70er Jahre sind ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal der Band\, deren freie Gruppenimprovisationen sich auf höchstem Niveau bewegen. 2021 erschien das erste Album Headlong\, im März 2025 dann der Nachfolger Dashin‘ Headless\, ein live-Mitschnitt eins LOFT-Konzertes im Rahmen des 10. Sie trat bereits ab 1995 als Solo-Künstlerin und als Sängerin verschiedener Bands auf\, 2003 siedelte sie schließlich nach Berlin über\, um am Jazz Institut Berlin Jazz-Gesant zu studieren.\nAb 2005 wirkte sie in zahlreichen musikalischen Theaterproduktionen unter der Regie von David Marton\, u. a. an den Sophiensaelen Fairy Queen oder hätte ich Glenn Gould nicht kennen gelernt nach Henry Purcell (2005)\, an der Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz Wozzeck nach Georg Büchner/Alban Berg (2007 )\, am Kongelige Teater in Kopenhagen Insomnia (2009)\, am Thalia Theater in Hamburg Die Krönung der Poppea nach Claudio Monteverdi (2009) und am Schauspiel Hannover Lulu nach Frank Wedekind/Alban Berg (2010) mit.\nWeitere Arbeiten am Burgtheater in Wien\, am Staatsschauspiel Dresden und am Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin. In Berlin veröffentlichte sie bereits die CD’s Y Move (Minor Music\, 2006)\, Fasil (ECM Records\, 2009) und Yelena K & The Love Trio (Double Moon Records\, 2010).\nSeit der Spielzeit 2015/2016 ist sie festes Ensemblemitglied der Münchner Kammerspiele unter der Intendanz von Matthias Lilienthal. \nFrank Gratkowski\, geboren 1963 in Hamburg\, studierte an der Kölner Hochschule für Musik und Tanz. Seine instrumentellen Kompetenzen hat er auf fast das gesamte Spektrum der Holzblasinstrumente\, einschließlich Flöten\, ausgedehnt. Er arbeitet intensiv an klanglichen Erweiterungen und Modifikationen seines Instrumentariums in Solo-Projekten und kleinen Formationen mit unorthodoxen\, zum Teil selbst entwickelten Spieltechniken und mikrointervallischen Konzepten. Als Bandleader und Komponist bewegt er sich im weiträumigen Kontext der zeitgenössischen improvisierten Musik; eine trennscharfe Unterscheidung zwischen Komposition und Improvisation gibt es bei ihm nicht.\nSchon während des Studiums arbeitete Gratkowski mit dem Posaunisten und Komponisten Klaus König\, in Georg Graewes Grubenklangorchester und der WDR Bigband. 1995 gründete er das Frank Gratkowski Trio mit Dieter Manderscheid\, Bass\, und Gerry Hemingway\, Schlagzeug\, zu dem 2000 der niederländische Posaunist Wolter Wierbos kam. Seit 2001 besteht ein Trio mit Achim Kaufmann\, Klavier\, und Wilbert de Joode\, Bass. Mit seinem ersten Soloprogramm war er Preisträger beim Wettbewerb „Musik kreativ“; als Solist hat er die bis dato dreiteilige CD-Reihe „Artikulationen“ veröffentlicht (1991\, 2000\, 2023). 2008 entstand das experimentelle Saxofon-Quartett „Fo[u]r Alto“. Er ist Mitbegründer des Multiple Joy[ce] Orchestra\, für das er auch komponiert. In den letzten Jahren arbeitet er zunehmend mit Musiker*innen der jüngeren Generation zusammen\, aktuell etwa in dem Quartett The Resonators.\nGratkowski spielte als Solist\, Bandleader oder Sideman auf den wichtigsten deutschen und zahlreichen internationalen Festivals. Unter anderem trat er mit einem Trio auf den Donaueschinger Musiktagen auf\, hatte 2014 einen Kompositionsauftrag für das Ensemble Zeitkratzer\, war 2021 Improviser in Residence beim österreichischen Neue Musik-Festival „Klangspuren“ und arbeitete als Solist mit dem Orchester des Westdeutschen Rundfunks (WDR). Auf dem Festival November Music in Den Bosch und dem Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival gastierter er mit dem Ensemble Apartment House\, für das er eine Auftragskomposition schrieb. Nach seiner Arbeit „Mature Hybird Talking“ für das und mit dem Ensemble Modern 2022 arbeitete er 2023 mit dem Ensemble Musikfabrik.\nUnter eigenem Namen veröffentlichte Frank Gratkowski um die 50 CDs\, als Sideman ist er an einer unbekannten Anzahl weiterer Produktionen beteiligt. 2005 erhielt er den renommierten Jazzpreis des Südwestrundfunks (SWR).\nFrank Gratkowski lebt in Berlin. The Resonators combine jazz\, avant-garde and lyrical power to create an intense musical experience. Jelena Kuljić’s voice – powerful\, nuanced\, unmistakable – is at the center of this energetic collective. \nOriginally created as an experiment by bassist Reza Askari\, The Resonators have developed their own new sound\, whose amalgamation of free jazz and rock elements quickly became the band’s trademark. The influences of psychedelic rock from the late 60s and early 70s in particular are a unique selling point of the band\, whose free group improvisations are of the highest standard. He works intensively on expanding and modifying the sound of his instruments in solo projects and small formations with unorthodox playing techniques and micro-intervallic concepts\, some of which he has developed himself. As a bandleader and composer\, he moves in the wide-ranging context of contemporary improvised music; there is no clear distinction between composition and improvisation in his work.\nDuring his studies\, Gratkowski already worked with the trombonist and composer Klaus König\, in Georg Graewe’s Grubenklangorchester and the WDR Bigband.
