Daraus entsteht ein lebendiger Dialog zwischen Genres\, die zwar unterschiedliche Ursprünge haben\, aber in kreativer Freiheit und ausdrucksstarker Intensität ihren gemeinsamen Nenner finden.\n„Eko“ (Ékó) – bedeutet auf Yoruba – einer der großen Sprachen Westafrikas – „Lernen“ oder „Bildung“. Dies kann die ruhelosen\, sich stets entwickelnden Forschungsgeist repräsentieren\, welche die Improvisation im Free Jazz auszeichnet. Klanglich erinnert dieses Wort auf Spanisch auch an“Echo”; eine Assoziation\, die die Idee der Resonanz der afrokubanischen Kultur hervorruft. Die Clave und Trommeln afrikanischer Herkunft verkörpern die rhythmische Essenz und verflechten sich mit der raffinierten Jazzharmonik und dem kontrapunktischen Wechselspiel der zeitgenössischen (klassischen) Musik.\nDer Geist von Santiago de Cuba ist in diesem Konzert auf konzeptionelle und emotionale Weise präsent\, da Yaniel Matos\, der in dieser Stadt geboren wurde\, seine kulturelle Identität und musikalische Erfahrung in jedes Stück einfließen lässt. Matos wurde am Konservatorium von Santiago de Cuba ausgebildet und setzte sein Cello- und Kompositionsstudium am Instituto Superior de Artes in Havanna fort. Zur Zeit arbeitete er mit bedeutenden Timba- und Jazzensembles zusammen\, darunter Issac Delgado y su Orquesta\, Paulito FG y su Élite und Orlando Valles-Maraca.\nIm Jahr 2000 zog er nach São Paulo – Brasilien\, wo er sich als vielseitiger Musiker in der populären Musikszene etablierte. In dieser Stadt nahm er sieben Alben auf\, komponierte Musik für mehrere brasilianische Spiel- und Dokumentarfilme und Serien\, und arbeitete in zahlreichen Projekten als Musiker\, Komponist und Musikproduzent mit. Nach eineinhalb Jahren in Deutschland erreicht seine künstlerische Neugier nun eine neue Dimension mit Eko Jazz Cuba\, wo eine Klangwelt zwischen Streichern und Perkussion erkundet wird. \nDurch seine Lebensstationen in Kuba\, Brasilien und Deutschland hat Matos eine umfassende und vielseitige Vision von Musik entwickelt. Sein Werdegang hat ihn dazu geführt\, verschiedene Genres zu erforschen und zu vermischen\, wodurch eine einzigartige musikalische Sprache entstanden ist\, die sich in diesem Werk wiederfindet. Zusammen mit einem Ensemble herausragender Musiker*innen aus der Kölner Musikszene initiiert Matos ein Projekt\, das Virtuosität mit Spontaneität\, und Tradition mit Innovation verbindet. The result is a lively dialog between genres that may have different origins\, but find their common denominator in creative freedom and expressive intensity.\n“Eko” (Ékó) – means ‘learning’ or ‘education’ in Yoruba\, one of the great languages of West Africa. This can represent the restless\, ever-evolving spirit of exploration that characterizes improvisation in free jazz. Sonically\, this word in Spanish is also reminiscent of “echo”; an association that evokes the idea of the resonance of Afro-Cuban culture. The clave and drums of African origin embody the rhythmic essence and intertwine with the refined jazz harmony and the contrapuntal interplay of contemporary (classical) music.\nThe spirit of Santiago de Cuba is present in this concert in a conceptual and emotional way\, as Yaniel Matos\, who was born in this city\, incorporates his cultural identity and musical experience into each piece. Matos was educated at the Conservatory of Santiago de Cuba and continued his cello and composition studies at the Instituto Superior de Artes in Havana. He is currently working with important timba and jazz ensembles\, including Issac Delgado y su Orquesta\, Paulito FG y su Élite and Orlando Valles-Maraca.\nIn 2000\, he moved to São Paulo\, Brazil\, where he established himself as a versatile musician in the popular music scene.
