DESCRIPTION:Chris Speed (USA) – sax\, cl.\nBrad Shepik (USA) – guit.\nHenning Sieverts (D) – b\, cl.\nTino Derado (D) – akk.\nDejan Terzic (D) – dr\, perc\,c omp.  \n\nDer Schlagzeuger und bayerische Kulturförderpreisträger Dejan Terzic präsentiert sich mit seinem Projekt „Underground“ und stellt seine aktuelle CD „DIASPORA“ vor\, die vom renommierten CD Label ENJA veröffentlicht wurde. Es ist die dritte Einspielung mit dieser Formation. Zentraler Ausgangspunkt der Interpretationen sind die folkloristischen musikalischen Erscheinungsformen des Balkan interpretiert durch die Eigenkompositionen des Band Leaders Dejan Terzik. Der Sound einer traditionellen Brass Band wurde erstmals durch Emir Kusturica’s Film „Underground“ einer größeren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Der Name des Films stand Pate für die den Namen und die Realisierung dieses Projekts. Dejan Terzic\, im ehemaligen Jugoslawien geboren\, hat sich lange mit der Musik der Balkanregion auseinandergesetzt\, allerdings geht es ihm nicht um die bloße Reproduktion von Volksmusik und Authentizität war nicht das oberste Gebot. Er sucht vielmehr die bewusste Auseinandersetzung zwischen traditioneller Folklore und improvisierter Musik. Als Schlagzeuger arbeitete er bisher mit vielen internationalen Größen des Jazz\, z.B. Lee Konitz\, Attila Zoller\, Bob Berg oder George Garzone. In Europa ist er als festes Mitglied bei Jens Winther\, Antonio Farao und Nils Wogram etabliert\, darüber hinaus ist er auf über 80 CD Einspielungen zu hören. Mit Chris Speed steht ihm vielleicht einer der wichtigsten amerikanischen Saxofonisten zur Seite. Durch seine Arbeit mit Dave Douglas\, Tim Berne’s Bloodcount\, Uri Caine und Jim Black\, hat er sich den Ruf eines außerordentlichen Saxophonisten erspielt. Der amerikanische Gitarrist Brad Shepik\, ist bekannt durch seine langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit Paul Motian\, Dave Douglas\, Charlie Haden\, Joey Baron und gilt als einer der interessantesten Gitarristen in der Jazzwelt. Henning Sieverts kann man ohne Zweifel als einen der wichtigsten Jazzbassisten der hiesigen Musikwelt betrachten. Er ist auf über 70 CD Einspielungen zu finden\, arbeitete mit Größen wie Roy Hargrove\, Kenny Wheeler\, Franco Ambrosetti\, uvm. In „Underground“ spielt Henning Sieverts auch Cello. Der Akkordeonist Tino Derado hat aufgrund seines langjährigen USA Aufenthaltes guten Kontakt mit der amerikanischen Szene\, und arbeitete u.a. mit Dave Liebman\, Gary Burton\, Peter Erskine und vielen anderen\, er lebt gegenwärtig in Berlin. \n„A diaspora (in Greek\, διασπορά – „a scattering [of seeds]“) is any movement of a population sharing common ethnic identity. While refugees may or may not ultimately settle in a new geographic location\, the term diaspora refers to a permanently displaced and relocated collective.“Diaspora is a large word and it needs to be handled very carefully; in this context I try to view it as a musical diaspora.Being born in a country that no longer exists compels you to address certain issues\, especially if you operate in the domain of folk music and folk culture in general. In terms of music\, I have never believed in authenticity\, or in the importance of emulating specific musical approaches when playing songs born out of the Balkan folk tradition. Furthermore\, I have come to understand that a real musical diaspora is something one can create by oneself\, in an awareness of tradition and history. While the first two albums recorded with the band Underground experimented with traditional folksongs\, it was immensely important to me to create and write my own songs and compositions in a sort of diasporic understanding.A diaspora often tends to assume a different course from that of the population in the original place of settlement\, expostulating the authenticity of its own culture in the process. Such developments\, in my view\, owe more to a notional image of a culture than to a realistic view. Reared and nurtured on nostalgia\, they are expressive of a longing for a time and a place that\, in most cases\, no longer exists. In my world\, I have simply tried to absorb as many influences from Balkan folk music as it has been my fortune to encounter\, finding my personal musical bearings through the medium of my own compositions and creating an individual musical diaspora; the only difference to the general understanding of a diaspora being that I would never consider this recording as forming part of the Balkan folk music culture/tradition.
