Matthias Mainz founded the trio with the French oud soloist Gregory Dargent and the Turkish-French cellist Anil Eraslan in the fall of 2019 in order to be able to play freely with borrowings from contemporary improvised and composed as well as non-European music in memory of the traditions of the piano trio. Instrumenting with the oud instead of a violin suggests numerous sonic associations that go far beyond the contexts of late romanticism, new music, or jazz. With extended playing techniques, a microtonal keyboard and live electronics, improvisations by the three musicians can cross the boundaries into electronic music and noise.

Perhaps it is in the nature of things that improvisation ensembles are often not given a long life. Mainz/Dargent/Eraslan, however, were able to defy the slumps in the concert circuit during the Corona crisis of 2020/2021 and deepen their work on a shared sound and a coherent flow of multistylistic influences. The development of the ensemble is conceived as a parallel process of improvisational development and compositional external perspectives.

Work commission 2021

The Swiss composer Edu Haubensak has written „UD“, a 20-minute, four-movement work with scordaturas for oud, cello and pianoforte, in which fascinating tableaus of steadily increasing tension arise from the stringed instruments tuned against each other and the tempered piano. The scordaturas of oud and cello mix with the reverberations of the percussive-inside-played strokes of the piano to create a sometimes dark, reduced music.

About the musicians

Gregory Dargent and Anil Eraslan had completed classical instrumental studies in Strasbourg before establishing themselves as improvising musicians. Gregory Dargent, coming from classical and electric guitar, has studied North African traditions of the oud intensively and combines them with the transfer of contemporary guitar techniques to the oud. Dargent and Eraslan are also involved with analog art photography and experimental and documentary film formats. Gregory Dargent published „Book H“ of photographs from three short visits to the sites of French atomic bomb tests with Saturneditions and is currently preparing to publish two more works. Anil Eraslan’s documentary project in development, „Sound Dreams of Istanbul,“ was awarded the Melodika Sound Award at the Istanbul Film Festival in the fall of 2020. After studying jazz trumpet, Matthias Mainz has realized formats between improvised and new music, media art, theater, and dance theater as a transdisciplinary musician and curator, and since 2015 has directed the Platform for Transcultural New Music as an instrument of artistic production and artistic-scientific research.

In recent years, Mainz uses his autodidactic devotion to the piano to work through hisepersonal musical imprints and implement them in improvisational and compositional contexts.

„UD“ was commissioned by the Plattform für Transkulturelle Neue Musik e.V. and the Tonhalle Düsseldorf. Mainz/Dargent/Eraslan – Hybrid Conversations was made possible by the kind support of the Kunststiftung NRW, the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Kunst- und Kulturstiftung der Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf and the Kulturamt der Bundesstadt Bonn.
