Wie bringt man drei komplementäre Elemente so in Übereinstimmung, dass ein neues symbiotisches Ganzes daraus entsteht? Ein Verfahren der frühen Farbfotografie gibt Aufschluss. Die auf die Gebrüder Lumière am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts zurückgehende Technik „Autochrome“ basiert darauf, dass aus der Rasterung der drei Farben Rot, Blau und Grün alle anderen Farben abgeleitet werden und so komplexe Farbfotos erstellt werden können. Autochrom heißt auch das Trio der Saxophonistin Luise Isabel Volkmann mit Bassistin Athina Kontou und Schlagzeuger Dominik Mahnig (früher: Max Santner). Alle drei sind weit gereist. Luise Isabel Volkmann kommt aus Bielefeld, lebte kurz in Berlin und lang in Paris, um über Kopenhagen und Leipzig in Köln zu landen. Athina Kontou hat griechische Wurzeln, wuchs in Frankfurt am Main und Athen auf und lebt heute in Leipzig. Schlagzeuger Dominik Mahnig wurde in Willisau (Schweiz) geboren, an den Hochschulen in Luzern und schließlich in Köln ausgebildet, wo sich seit 2012 auch sein Lebensmittelpunkt befindet. Drei Lebenswege, die in Autchrom zu einem gemeinsamen Erzählstrang gerastert werden.

Als lebenshungrige Musikerin hat Luise Volkmann ein Faible für Anekdoten, egal, ob sie aus Filmen, Büchern, Comics oder der eigenen Alltagswahrnehmung kommen. Überall greift sie auf, was sie umtreibt, im Persönlichen ebenso wie im Globalen. Ihre musikalischen Geschichten haben stets einen Hintergrund. Wenn sie mit ihren beiden Gespielen ins Musizieren kommt, vergisst man ganz schnell, welche Instrumente man hört. Alle drei leisten ihre Beiträge, übernehmen intuitiv Verantwortung, ohne sich in den Vordergrund zu spielen. Der spielerische Impuls wechselt unablässig zwischen den drei Protagonisten. Im Mittelpunkt steht zu jedem Zeitpunkt die Geschichte, und die drei musikalischen Grundfarben dienen dazu, sie bestmöglich abzubilden. „Als Komponistin interessiert mich der Klangkörper mehr als Solisten“, so Volkmann. „Von meiner menschlichen und ideologischen Ausrichtung ausgehend, glaube ich an Kollektivität und Gemeinschaft. Die Gesellschaft konzentriert sich viel zu sehr auf den Einzelnen. Auch im Jazz geht es immer um die Bandleader. Mir ist es viel wichtiger, dass es wie im Rock Bands gibt, die selbst als Klangkörper funktionieren. In der Probenphase haben wir hart daran gearbeitet, dass jeder seine Verantwortung wahrnimmt.“

Auf dem Weg zu dieser Kollektivität hat das Trio viel Klangforschung betrieben. Dabei kamen unterschiedlichste Fragen auf, deren Antworten akribisch gesucht wurden. Wie kann das Saxofon ähnlich klingen wie der gestrichene Bass? Wie kann man auf dem Becken quietschen wie auf dem Saxofon? Es ging nicht um Abgrenzung, sondern um Verschmelzung der verschiedenen Klangquellen. Musik als Prozess der Integration, genau wie bei den Farbpigmenten einer autochromen Fotografie.

How do you bring three complementary elements into harmony in such a way that a new symbiotic whole emerges from them? A method used in early color photography provides the answer. The „autochrome“ technique, which goes back to the Lumière brothers at the beginning of the 20th century, is based on the fact that all other colors can be derived from the screening of the three colors red, blue and green, thus creating complex color photographs. Autochrome is also the name of the trio of saxophonist Luise Isabel Volkmann with bassist Athina Kontou and drummer Dominik Mahnig (formerly Max Santner). All three have traveled far. Luise Isabel Volkmann comes from Bielefeld, lived briefly in Berlin and long in Paris to end up in Cologne via Copenhagen and Leipzig. Athina Kontou has Greek roots, grew up in Frankfurt am Main and Athens and now lives in Leipzig. Drummer Dominik Mahnig was born in Willisau (Switzerland), trained at the universities in Lucerne and finally in Cologne, where his center of life has been since 2012. Three life paths that are gridded into a common narrative thread in Autchrom.

As a musician hungry for life, Luise Volkmann has a soft spot for anecdotes, whether they come from films, books, comics or her own everyday perception. Everywhere she picks up on what is on her mind, in the personal as well as the global. Her musical stories always have a background. When she gets into making music with her two players, one quickly forgets which instruments one is listening to. All three make their contributions, intuitively taking responsibility without playing themselves into the foreground. The playful impulse changes incessantly between the three protagonists. At any given moment, the focus is on the story, and the three basic musical colors serve to depict it in the best possible way. „As a composer, I’m more interested in the body of sound than in soloists,“ Volkmann says. „From my human and ideological orientation, I believe in collectivity and community. Society focuses way too much on the individual. Even in jazz, it’s always about the bandleader. It’s much more important to me that, as in rock, there are bands that function as a body of sound themselves. In the rehearsal phase, we worked hard to make sure that everyone took their responsibilities.“

On the way to this collectivity, the trio did a lot of sound research. In the process, a wide variety of questions arose, the answers to which were meticulously sought. How can the saxophone sound similar to the bowed bass? How can you squeak on the cymbal like you do on the saxophone? It was not about demarcation, but about fusion of the different sound sources. Music as a process of integration, just like the color pigments of an autochromic photograph.
