20160620San Francisco bassist, composer, improviser, and bandleader Lisa Mezzacappa visits with the German premiere of ORGANELLE, her newest composition for improvisers. ORGANELLE is a “set“ of pieces inspired by diverse scientific processes – some enormous and unfathomable, others impossibly microscopic – that form a whole through the insights and explorations of master improvisers.  The composition draws its musical ideas from the different ways that the human body, the natural world, and the cosmos mark and “experience” the passing of time. The notes, rhythms, musical relationships, melodies, and structures in the work are each connected to theories of cell biology, astrophysics, paleontology, zoology, or neuroscience, exploring these otherwise-imperceptible phenomena through sound.

This year, Mezzacappa is performing and recording ORGANELLE with musicians in Köln, DE; Naples, IT; Paris, FR; and Berkeley, US – each ensemble representing a unique musical community and offering its own improvisational dialect in the work’s performance.

Lisa Mezzacappa is a San Francisco Bay Area composer, bassist, bandleader and producer. Called “one of the most imaginative figures on the Bay Area creative jazz scene” by the San Jose Mercury News and “a Bay Area treasure” by KQED national public radio, she has been an active part of California’s vibrant experimental music community for nearly 15 years.  Mezzacappa’s activities as a composer and bandleader include ethereal chamber music, electro-acoustic works, avant-garde jazz, music for groups from duo to large ensemble, and collaborations with film, video, sculpture and installation art.  Recent projects include works inspired by noir crime fiction; by Victorian lady adventurers; and by vintage Italian science fiction comic books.  This spring she is artist-in-residence at the Cité des Arts International in Paris, FR.
