Herbie Nichols SUNG is the first vocal project devoted to pianist/composer Herbie Nichols‘ compositions with lyrics exclusively written by bandleader/vocalist Fay Victor. The project showcases Nichols‘ music in a unique way rebuilding it from the ground up, using his compositions as springboards to improvisation while still honoring the compositional contours of his music. The addition of lyrics turns Nichols‘ knotty melodic masterpieces into stories, creating more dimensions for exploration. Fay Victor has explored Nichols music for over 15 years, playing Nichols compositions with everyone from Misha Mengelberg to Duck Baker. Victor has actively lead groups focused on Nichols compositions for close to eight years, growing the music to the current open and joyous expression. Moreover, the Caribbean roots of both Nichols‘ and Victor create a connection and understanding that may not have been invoked with earlier tributes and projects devoted to his music. Most important to the core of the project is the desire to expose as many listeners as possible to these great works and provide another way into the delightful musical world of Herbie Nichols.

Herbie Nichols (1919-1963) was a pianist/composer, a contemporary of Thelonious Monk and a major jazz innovator whose music has been the focal point of a small number of projects over the years by musicians such as Mary Lou Willams, Roswell Rudd, Misha Mengelberg, The ICP Orkest, The Jazz Composers Collective and Duck Baker amongst others.
